Just for some fun I'd be interested to know what your favourite recorded tones are, and the amp to match. I'm sure there's similar threads already but I don't think they're this specific, so list your top 3 (or 5 or whatever) players/albums/amps.

I think mine are
1. Angus - Back In Black - 2203?
2. Slash - UYI - #34
3. Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues - JTM45
4. Adam Jones - 10,000 Days - blend of many
5. Steve Clark - High n Dry - 2203 I think

Shit, there's about 90 more. 5 will do.

Gary Moore-Corridors Of Power
Gary Moore-Victims Of The Future
Ed Van Halen-VH l
Ed Van Halen-VH ll
Rudolf Schenker & Matthias Jabs-Blackout
I’m not sure what amps Gary was using but I’ll assume Marshall’s . Ed was using his Marshall of course. I think Rudy and Matthias were using 50 watt Marshall’s

Zakk Wylde - No more Tears
Zakk Wylde - No Rest for the Wicked 1989 live tone

Eddie Van Halen VHI and VHII

Randy Rhodes Live tones. I found his live tones evolved far and beyond the album tones and he preferred a fair amount of gain. I think he played a one wire modded 1959 circuit JMP.

That’s it. I have no other favourites.

Page - No Quarter solo live 'The Song Remains the Same' 1973
1969 Marshall Super Lead, 59 LP, and a couple pedals.

No clue why the video says 1976. Zeppelin didn't even tour that year.

Too many to really list, but I’ll highlight some

VH -first 4 albums
Yngwie - First 3 albums
Metallica- RTL
AC/DC- Let there be rock and Powerage (74 Jailbreak is killer too)
Children of Bodom- Hatebreeder
Dokken- Back for the Attack
Stevie Ray Vaughan- Couldn’t stand the weather album
Savatage- All older albums with Criss Oliva.
Accept- Balls to the Wall and Metal Heart.

Les Claypool solo stuff with the Ampeg SVT 4 Pro heads and a wall of Ampeg Pro cabs.

Bass!

Just some that come to mind.

VH 1
VH 2
John Sykes Whitesnake 1987
John Norum Face the Truth
Dokken Under Lock and Key
Dokken Back for the Attack
RATT Invasion of your Privacy
Just about anything Michael Schenker

As you can see Marshall is the clear winner in the history of RNR, all the others are a variant of the same thing.

All great stuff in there . Schenker is on my Mount Rushmore of players and the tones Warren and Robbin got on Invasion are stellar. I definitely could’ve added more than 5 to my list

All the guitars on The Black Crowes Southern Harmony and Amorica albums
Most Hendrix
VH Fair Warning
Slash on AFD
Dean Deleo on the first 2 STP albums

Bjorn Gelotte - In Flames - Clayman - Peavey 5150
James Hetfield - Metallica - Black Album - Mesa Mark III's and modded Marshalls
James Hetfield - Metallica - Load - who knows, Mesa Triaxis and 2:90, Mesa Rectifiers, tons of other random amps
Van Halen - Van Halen - Van Halen 1 (Specifically for Eruption which is good enough to hold this place on its own) - Modded Plexi
Van Halen - Van Halen - Live: Right Here Right Now - Peavey 5150
Stian Thoresen - Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia - ENGL Savage 120
Andy Timmons - Theme from a Perfect World - Mesa Lonestar and JHS @+ drive pedal
John Petrucci - Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - Mesa Mark IIC+

Probably a whole bunch more but these are the standouts for the trifecta of best album/playing/tone combo.

And cant forget Jerry Cantrell tones on pretty much anything, but especially Dirt and Tripod

Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine - who the hell knows?

So many greats. I know I’m echoing what others have already said, but:
VH-I & II
1st Yngwie album
No more Tears
Whitesnake ‘87
Toss-up: 1st Extreme or White Lion Pride

No More Tears, Extreme, White Lion Pride and several Whitesnake ‘87 tracks are all boosted Marshall - what a wide variety of very different signature tones with a wound up, pissed off marshall and a stomp out front.

Brian setzer - sleepwalk - 59 gretsch, Roland space echo, 59 bassman

Mark knopfler - money for nothing - 59 Paul, wah, plexi

Slash - mr Brownstone - les paul, Marshall

Srv - little wing - strat, vibroverb, major or dumble?

Jerry Cantrell - generally speaking - g&l or lpc - friedman Marsha or Jj, bogners, snorkeler, etc.

Adam jones - generally speaking - lpc - diezel ch3 , Marshall super lead

Tom morello - I just love the sound of a neck single coil and a marshall...

Josh homme- ovation ultra gp , maestro or stone deaf pdf, full tone ultimate octave, sib echo drive, ampeg VT or other stupid loud clean amp.

That's enough for now...

Kings X Dogman — recto
VH II — plexi
EJ Ah Via — twin/SSS/plexi
Toad the Wet Sprocket Coil — matchless C30
Robben Ford Handful of Blues — ODS
Tool Aenima & Undertow - plexi and recto and who knows what else
Vai ALS - 100A & 100B
Demartini lots - plexi and slo
