I play hot rodded Marshalls and just wondering what people like.

I've had good luck with LPS's in the PT slot. Chinese 12ax7b's in V1 and Ruby 12ax7 AC5 HG+ in V2.

What say you guys?

Chinese square getter, Rft and Mullard 163 for non production ..ruby/tad 12ax7c for current

Tung sol reissue is always a safe bet. I recently discovered the Mullard CV4004 reissue. I like it even better. A little less bright.

I've found you can't make a blanket statement as to which tube is best. Every amp likes different tubes. I roll tubes in every amp I get to figure out what works best.

Very true. I found that Shuguang 12AX7B's sound best in my Metalhead modded 800 but they didn't sound quite as good as other tubes in my stock 800.

Picked up a 79 2203 not too long ago. It came with the Japanese Mullard copy 12ax7, made in the 60s/70s. I swapped them with my usual suspects, vintage British Mullard/Amperex/RFT/Chinese Bs. Nope, the Jap Mullard copies sounded best. Previous owner was correct.

Although not a current production, you could get an OS Tung Sol from the 60s that tests great for the 25-30 range and of all of the many many tubes, new and old is easily linking for me in the V1 spot of any Modded Marshall based amp I’ve tried.

Like Deanmachine said, Chinese square getter 6N4J's. A few people here were selling a bunch of them a few months ago and I tried them out. Very nice, much quieter than the Ruby's my amp shipped with. They used to come stock in many Marshalls.

I have quite a few of these square getters. Honestly, I feel they are overrated. Nothing special to me compared to CP Chinese tubes. But it's subjective....

I'm a fan of the Mullard CV4004 reissues as well.

Ive gotten mixed results with the same tubes in different modded Marshalls, Its worth a bit of time to nail 'em down for a particular mod. Friedmans are voiced darker than Fortins. Langners are more compressed than most mods, and are slamming V1 hard enough to induce oscillation past 3 o clock (or 130 depending on your pickups) It all ends up being a factor in your selection of what sounds best in a particular amp. Ive also gotten good and less good versions of almost everything out there, so the particular tube thats in your hand ends up being your reference point for that brand

I use 3 tungsram 12ax7 and 2 RFT el34's...

If I couldn't I would use 3 well selected chinese and 2 chinese el34 as well...

Who has compared the Gold Lion Premium vs the Standard pin?

I’ve tried most all mentioned but in a Marshall Ei Ecc83’s take the cake in V1. If I had to go cp I’d probably go with Tungsols.

I like that CV4004 as well, but the one I had went south.

It really depends on the amp. I like a Tungsol RI 12AX7 in V1 of most amps. JJs in V2 & V3, and an LPS for phase inverter. Seems to work well for me.
