EDIT: I should of started this by saying that I'm a punk rock guitar player that loves Tone searching. One of all time Favorites is Poison’s Nothing but a good time tone. Does Anyone know what they used on that track to Achieve that Big Fat Warm Tone?

Pretty much every tone Exodus has gotten from Another Lesson in Violence through Blood In, Blood Out. Half of the shit I own is just because Gary Holt used it on a record. Also every Heathen record since Victims of Deception.

I'm also gonna throw out Carcass' Surgical Steel and Accept's Blood of the Nations.

He's associated with the Randall RG100ES but I don't know if that was used on that particular track.

My guess is the studio did that. Multi-tracks. Chorus. Delay. Reverb.

Mine would be early Crue and Ratt, Van Halen, KSE and MOP (Master of Puppets).

I was gonna add Warren DeMartini as he laid out some cool riffs in '85 (5 years after my high school graduation :D ) on Lay It Down in example that we've all heard a millions times.

What's another time gonna hurt (3:50)? :)

Yeah - his tone, phrasing and note choice on solos really set him (Warren) apart.

And I wasn't really trying to pick on CC DeVille. He was a good player and had a good base tone no doubt. And most guitarists benefited/added to/covered up studio recordings with a wash of reverb and multi tracking etc - especially at that time right? But CC to me kind of took that over the top a bit. Same could be said for EVH as time wore on.

Crazy how this sounds on its own as opposed to in the mix. Took me forever to figure out that when my guitar sounds great in my jam room (no band), it usually gets lost in the mix

I'm not a Huge C.C. Fan, it's just his tone on that song is great to my ears. I've always wanted a tone that would be a cross between that (Big Fat & Warm) & Life of Agony Tone on "Ugly" & "Soul Searching Sun" which I already know was a Dual Recto Rackmount.

Didn't CC endorse Crate amps like the Blue VooDoo at some point ? Those sound similar to me.

For me, Warren, Lynch, Akira, EVH, Le Tekro, Stryper and a host of others come to mind.

He was a Big Crate GX-130C User at some point. I saw them live once and he had a Rack of 4-5 of them.

Yah agreed. I wasn't at all implying that he was any better (or not) than CC DeVille, although CC can play riffs.

Another guitarist I find interesting is Steve Stevens. He's well versed maybe underrated and what I consider a more "deep thinking" pop progressive guitarist than average. And by the way, (linkage) Stephen McGrath (Billy's current bass guitarist) and my trio band "Mozez" amongst many other bands too played the local scene here in Venice California and the Hollywood Strip area throughout (1980-1990) exclusively. Just a note: Prior, Stephen was also in a cover trio band named "Seagal" with rock guitarist Keith Reynaldo at the helm performing 90% Led Zeppelin covers note-for-note. When I see and hear Keith doing "The Song Remains The Same" literally it sounds like he's played it ten thousand times more than Plant. I don't think there is any Zep song Keith hasn't mastered on his Vintage Blonde Gibson Explorer.

Last thing...I recall back in 1982 at the Playa Del Rey Culver City Convention Center cap.300 we (illegally) packed in there 1,200 :D. RATT was relatively new and was sponsoring the gig. We opened (I had a a fuzz box, chorus & SS acoustic 150 amp w/1-4x12 something), then Seagal completed their set and RATT went on to dazzle the crowd. Then After ==>> Mozez & Seagal wasted no time to began the universal tradition hoisting and guzzling unlimited beer & Kessler and at that time attempting to observe the RATT sing out of a 100% polyester saliva coated sm57 mic because the whole shit's a BLURRRRRRR :D

Those were some fucking good times baby... :)
