JBs are great IMO, Super Ds are good as well as far as the classics. But, after just throwing in my 3rd MCP(Afwayu, Detroiter and now a Solution) I have to say that any freaking thing from Wade just rocks. Best clarity of any pickup I've had, even this Solution at 18k is still clear as a bell under high gain.

EVH Frankie pup. Covers blues, rock, to heavy. I can get VH, to Chevelle, to AIC, ZAKK, it just depends on the distance and guage of the strings.

Guitarforce Superstar. Fairly hot, but cleans up nice. Very balanced tone with great clarity. I have them in a bunch of my guitars including my newest USA Charvel San Dimas and it absolutely rips. These pickups are a crucial part of my rig.
I have tried quite a few pickups (humbuckers only) from many of the small shop winders. One thing I can say for sure is that they have all rivaled the Gibson, DiMarzio and SD stock stuff I have had in my guitars. The difference is clearly noticeable. The Guitarforce Superstar and RebelFire have been my favorite.

Ive tried lots of pickups...I like the Bare Knuckle Nailbomb most, both Ceramic and Alnico, depends on the guitar though I normally leans towards the ceramic version its aggressive and tight yet smooth in the right places. KILLER pickup !

Tie between a Warpig and the EVH Wolfgang. Both rule.

Moderate to high output:
MCP Garuda
MCP Hothead

Low output:
OX4
MCP TWreck

I love the PRS DGT and Suhr DSV for all around use. I also dig and use the Tremonti Treble (which is the same pickup as the SC250 Treble, btw).

Tremonti Treble
Hot pickup but cutting, articulate, woody and is good for every genre not only metal.

Couple of votes so far for the Duncan Custom pickups. There are 3 to choose from Custom (Ceramic), Custom/Custom (Alinco 2), and Custom 5 (Alinco 5). I have an ESP/LTD George Lynch GL-200 with the Custom/Custom and it's absolutely perfect for early VH. For 80's shred, I also think the Duncan Distortion would be a great choice.

+311

I bought a JB from Guitar Center for my HSS Strat a long time ago (OK, 8 years ago - I'm still a noob) to see what all the fuss was about. Pretty bright. Called Duncan's 800# and they suggested the Custom Custom TB-11. They then did an advanced replacement with me over the phone sight unseen. Once I got the TB-11, I swapped it out and was very happy. Sent the JB back to them with label they provided.

Talk about great customer service!

I've since taken the TB-11 out of the Strat and put it in my C1+. This is my Drop C chugga guitar and that pup handles that stuff very well I must say. I've also since put a Duncan Distortion in my Strat :D
