I looking to buy a Marshall. What's your fav and why. I'm wanting 70's/80's to modern tones. I have a Einstien and a Booge MK III now, never had a Marshall. I've got GAS for a Freidman and I'm saving for one but thinking about a stock used Marshall as fix for now.

Bone stock? My favorite was an 80's JCM 800 2204 (50 watt), vertical inputs.

If you want modern tones you'll need a master volume model like a 2203 or 2204 as the EQ tends to be a lot stronger for controlling the mids and top end. Those will still get you in the classic 70's territory too but not spot on. For glorious 70's and 80's tones you can't go wrong with a 1959 or 1987 Non Master model. If you don't like using pedals for added drive you'll need something newer like a JVM which has gain up the wahzoo.

I have a bone stock jmp 2204, and a 2203,and love Them. I never want to mod it. A good boost and you'll have more gain than you need. Turn the boost off and hit it hard and you have ac/dc, rich and clear. I have never understood paying a couple grand just so you dont need a boost, when they sound so good stock.

My buddy Bob's 69 Super Lead with a reissue TS 808 in front of it. What a tone machine. Second choice was an older "big knob" JTM 45 reissue (the one with the EFX loop)...killer tone. But both had to be played LOUD !

<---- Just see my avatar :) , the jubilee. I will say I have not tried that many marshalls though (only owned or tried: DSL401, DSL50, AVT275, 6101LE, artist, and JCM800 2 channel)

Vintage Modern 2266 in reasonable range. 1974X for the best natural overdrive.

No, not for me anyway

If the guy is saving up for a Friedman, he probably won't have the cash for a Jubilee...
Good old JCM 800, 2203 or 2204, easy to find, easy to sell, sounds classic
Of course, good tubes and cab will have a lot to do with how it sounds, maybe even more than modern amps me thinks

Stock JMP 2204 with a stock JMP-1 fed into the low gain input

MY favorite Out the box plug and play was the 2203KK.
Wish it would of had an effects loop.

It's weird how insane that preamp is with a Mesa Strategy 500. The combo of 6l6 and kt88s just make it roar. Cleans are a bit meh though.

JMP1 its a great preamp, like it better than the triaxis

But JVM is my choice

All time favorite was a 100W 1969 Super Lead (never owned, only played).

Current all time favorite is my 1971' 100W SLP that is being modded by Friedman.

Next amp however, will be an early 70's JMP that I will never mod.

My 69 100 watt plexi. It's now back to stock preamp, modded power section and it still kicks.

Jvm 410h. It can do almost every Marshall tone, my favorite being od1 orange.
in second place, I'd nominate a silver jubilee.

^^This

I was in the same boat as the OP and bought this a few months ago. Its a 1984 vertical input 2204. Throw a Monte Allum modded SD-1 in front and it gets very close to the utopian Marshall rock tone :D It should hole me over until I can get my hands on a Cali mod. This one is in too good of condition to mod and I decided I'm just going to keep it bone stock.
