Bone stock I like 70's jmp's , a 2203 or 2204 would be a great choice or the non master vol 1959 or 1987 are great amps but with an attenuator or master volume added. For small combos I like the 1974x, but the jtm 30 and dsl 401 were both great combo amps that can be had for cheap.

JVM410 head for me. Best stock amp made by Marshall in my opinion.

1981 or 1982 50 watt Marshall JCM 800 2204 Master Volume model, that has two vertical inputs.

I have a photo somewhere....

i'm searching for an early 80s JCM800 2204, this thread ain't helping the gas ;0

til now a late 70s JMP i borrowed for a bit through greenbacks was probably the best marshall i've played through, and a Cali mod i had was extremely nice, but very far from stock =)

I had a JMP 2204 from '83. Amazing amp, sorry I sold it. And way too cheap...

My research has me to believe that the JCM800's were built the same and had the same components up untill they went to horizontal inputs. This change occured very early in 1984. So I believe a 1981/82 would be the same amp (on paper :D )as an early 1984.

Surprised no one has mentioned the YJM yet. Gets really good reviews.

I looking to buy a Marshall. What's your fav and why. I'm wanting 70's/80's to modern tones. I have a Einstien and a Booge MK III now, never had a Marshall. I've got GAS for a Freidman and I'm saving for one but thinking about a stock used Marshall as fix for now.

If I got an Einstein, I wouldn't even look at Marshall ;) Seriously, you can get a used DSL or JCM800 and get Friedman to mod it! the new Friedman Steve Stevens head sounds great.

6100LM channel 3 only. Fat, violin like tone perfect for soloing. Everything else about the amp sucked though.

Forgot to mention afd and Yjm , both cool stock Marshall's.

Early 2204 or 2550/2555. I've owned and loved 'em all.

Everyone should have a decent Marshall in the house!

I thought the Channel 3 on my 6101LE with EL34 and LM mod was the worst channel on the amp. I liked channel 1, 2a, and 2b. I didn't dig 2c that much or 3. Channel 3 would feedback way too easily on my amp.

Probably the JTM45.

But.......I haven't played the new Slash or YJM heads. Never played a KK. There's a new Zakk on the way as well, correct?

I'm sure those are all great amps. I do like the old 70's JMP and 80's JCM's. Great amps.

Tough question. They are inconsistent so it could be any model at any given time. I've played many 80's 800's that sounded terrible so I can't generalize.

Plug in the guitar and go? DSL 100.

Between it's two channels it has all of the tones mentioned. EL34 power section, bias pots, and reverb to boot!

Love mine.

I guess the best answer depends on if you want multiple channels or not, really...
