I've been playing my beat 92 strat a lot lately and have GAS for a nicer one. I have a CS neck and ordered a body from MJT a few days ago, hopefully that works out.

Anyways, who makes your guys favorite strats? I want something with a slightly thinner neck and flatter radius than you would usually find on a strat. SS frets would be awesome too.

I would like a suhr but I've tried a load of them and I would like to try something new first. Maybe luxxtone/thorn?

Try to find an old MIA Hamer Daytona if you can. I had one and still miss it. Kind of a Suhr but 10 years earlier. Flat boards, thinner, wider necks, Duncan pickups and Wilkinson bridges.

I'd go to all the shops in your area and just pick the best one. I've found it's pretty random. One of my favorite Strats is a Squier.

Partsocasters and frankenstrats are the best route if you're really into playability and personality. I have one that I've made over the years out of vintage pieces that I've found in pawn shops, thrift stores, and eBay. If you're up to the challenge it's a fun experience. I've got one made out of parts from all over the 50s-60s and it's the best playing guitar out there.

Problem with trying to piece together a partscaster with vintage stuff: picking through all the fakes.

I bought a used Charvel Pro Mod made in Japan for around $500. It plays and sounds awesome, I had my doubts, but was pleasantly surprised and how well it plays. Biggest complaint is the Floyd isn't routed, so no pulling up or lowering the bridge too far as it hits the body.

Another thought would be an ESP Vintage or Vintage Plus if you could find one. Again, not stainless frets, but a more modern take on a classic strat.

Very true. I've been amazed at how well some people can forge dates and such. It takes years before you'll get something entirely the way you want it with the right parts.

I actually just got what I consider one of the best Strat type guitars available that does not cost $5-6k. It is a TMG Dover with a medium relic and pickups by Sliders. I did opt for a humbucker in the bridge and the Callaham vintage/aged trem. The neck is sublime and the tones are exactly what a good Strat should sound like. It is in the 2-3k range and there aren't that many used for sale that I was able to find. I talked extensively with the new owner of TMG, Jonathan Brosnan, and he was able to give me exactly what I asked for, quickly and priced right. Now, it is not in any way a metal type guitar although I would suppose you could get those tones with the right amps and pedals. What it does excel at is blues and classic rock.

Partscasters and MJTs. Both fuckin rule. You got a good thing headed your way, M. Post something up when you get it, dude.

I bought a used MVP CS strat with a bridge humbucker, and that's pretty damn good but it has a 9.5" radius..

I make my favorite strats... Here is my Musikraft '69 clone, body painted and relic'd by MJT. everything else I did. The Wizz pickups sound incredible. This is one bad m'fer:

I'm a Suhr guy. But I have a 2014 AM deluxe Tele that plays just rips. Compound fret board, 10-14 radius and Fenders new modern C shape neck is very shred friendly. No stainless frets tho. Strats have the same neck. You can find newer AM deluxe strats for close $1,000 used all day on evilbay.

A big sway for you. Interesting. Are you coming back to some roots after going full swing? If anyone on RT has had some of the best builds money can buy, it's you.

I figured out what works for me for metal music, which is a Teuffel Tesla in SH or HH. I had a Teuffel Birdfish which did everything else amazingly well but keeping a guitar worth five figures around for non-metal is kind of stupid when I play metal most of the time. I figure a nice strat or two and the CS Tesla I have finishing up should be fine.
