Pete Thorn and Shawn Tubbs are the best of the bunch by a landslide. Spent two days sick in bed a while back and watched more demo videos from more people than I care to remember and those two guys are on another level compared to the rest.

I didn't know Tubbs played for Carrie Underwood and haven't seen his youtube videos but I LOVE the first two The Violet Burning albums he was on. One of the albums had Glenn Pearce on it also so I'm not sure who played what. I'll make sure to check out the videos!

I like Chappers and the Captain at Andertons - mainly because they are entertaining, talk a power of shite and don't take it too seriously.

I doubt I would base any buying decision on something recorded by a store however

Love those guys, even if the videos go on forever, they are funny and pretty honest.
The one they did for the Mesa Cab Clone when the Mesa rep was there was the most uncomfortable video review I've ever seen

Pete Thorn and Sim Vilo, but I consider both of their videos more as demos than reviews, even though Pete will talk about the gear in question. A review should have some critical elements to it and those guys are more about accentuating the positives. I'm fine with that.

Regarding the comments about compensation, Pete has "If I'm demoing gear, I have a relationship with the manufacturer." in his TGP sig. With as in-demand as he must be as a supporting musician, it doesn't make sense that he'd be able to make the volume of gear vids he puts out without some form of compensation. That's cool. Pete makes everything sound great, but sometimes you can tell when a particular piece of gear has especially inspired him.

I assume Sam gets compensated for some of those demos as well as many of them have been linked to manufacturers' websites.

i agree with your terminology, however, i prefer demo's to reviews.

true, Pete is ethical enough to explicitly indicate his relationship but a lot of people that do 'reviews' are not so transparent about their relationship with dealers and/or manufacturers so that 'critical' element is not necessarily as objective as one might think.

I have to also agree that as far as watching a video. Pete Thorn takes the trophy for me.

However I am into brutal metal more than anything. I really enjoy Fluff's videos all around, I enjoy Scallon for comedy and riffing purposes (his riffs are freaking awesome) and Ola is just the King.

I have watched their videos and have used them all to get an idea of what I am looking at (hearing)

However, even tho Ola's are amazing I understand he is a very talented producer. He does do raw tracks sometimes but I feel that I will not get the same tones as he does that I am hearing in the video, even if I had the same set up.

When it comes to me deciding on a piece of gear without being able to play it myself I prefer to watch as many videos as I can and lean more towards the basement (low grade) videos.

FWIW when I decided on my Old VHT, I had it narrowed down and Bob Savages video made me make the decision. Even thought I got the Pitbull which is a different beast, something about this video made me say I must have a VHT.

I completely ignore Ola's videos as reviews; but enjoy them a lot as a listener because he is a great player, riff writer, and has mad production skills. But he makes anything sound amazeballs in one way or another to me, so it is kind of pointless from a gear buying decision.

Same to a lesser degree with Fluff.

The Anderton's reviews are tiresomely wordy and they just seem way too pleased with themselves.

TBH, I like end user reviews. People who have bought the dang things with their own money because they love amps/gear. Some guys flip a lot but they are not full time gear reviewers like some of these others seem to be.

For example, I have been looking a lot of Rockinchippy's stuff the last week or so. He likes a lot the amps I like, mics well, doesn't run off at the mouth and gives a very solid picture of what the amp is all about. But AFAIK he is buying this stuff (and flipping it I am sure) for his own use and not trying to make it a big production.

There are a number of folks like that. You have to slog through a bunch of badly micced clueless hacks, too, but that's part of the fun, I s'pose. Sometimes it is also good to see the depths to which a piece of gear can be taken. Reminds me to play with the stuff I already have a bit.

This. I love Pete's demo's too and like you I wouldn't call them a "review" either because I've never heard him say one thing negative about a product. Kinda makes it have a commercial vibe but like you said that's fine and I take it for what it is.

I do wish he'd make his video's more review like with his knowledge though....
