Fek just brought something up, the pad under the neckplate..

So I just thought of something............I am wondering if that pad under the neckplate could absorb vibrations and energy to be transfered to the entire guitar hence making it sound more dull? Why have a pad there to isolate vibrations and energy to transfer?

I need to try this.
 
All I know is that this guy seemed to know what he was talking about and it made sense to me. Something along the lines of it was an unneeded part and only dampened the vibration. He also said that he cleaned off some stickers and other goop in the neck pocket.

In the end, the guitar rings much better acoustically and feels more solid somehow. Could be the 10's compared to the 9's I had on there too though.
 
I don't know - the only guitar I ever owned that had a pad under the plate was a TAG. So that's pretty telling in and of itself. I do know based on my own limited experience that simply loosening the neck bolts and reseating the neck can sometimes have a very noticeable affect on the tone/resonance/whatever. My best sounding guitar has shims in the neck pocket AND under the nut AND a loose neck pocket. By all rights, it should suck. And I've had guitars with perfect neck pockets that weren't anything special tone-wise. Some people want a neck pocket so tight that bolts are an afterthought. :lol: :LOL: Suhr will tell you that a neck pocket that is TOO tight is a bad thing.

It's hard to make heads or tails of it sometimes. At least for me...
 
The pad basically just protects the finish. There is still the same amount of clamping force in the neck pocket which is what matters the most.

Yeah, everyone's experience really muddies the waters. I would think wood on wood would be the best :confused:

I'll chyme in I just took the pad off my neck plate of my Suhr last night, really funny ya'll brought this up. It made a bit difference and seemed to ME to make the guitar a bit acoustically louder and let the highs come through a bit more, also it feels like it resonates a bit more and has more of a direct feeling when I play the notes. Whether or not this makes sense to anyone I don't know, but I don't give a shit about my finish cracking, in fact I wish it wasn't there and it was nitro instead, or oil, or not at all :)

OK, as for the neck plate pad...it has nothing to do with the connection between the neck and the neck pocket. It won't effect the tone. If you hear a difference its because you want to hear a difference...it isn't there.

That said, I always remove the felt washers from my strap buttons so I don't dampen my strap's resonance :poke:
