Fellow axemen...how do you keep your fingertips from splitting?

Same but I cut my finger nails every week. (Toenails every 4w) I also take calcium, collagen, and D3. I don't bite my nails but I can see that being a problem. I do know the feeling as it has happened once or twice and it is not a good one. I was actually going to tell @Shreddy Mercury to let his middle finger nail grow out, in addition to the other ideas. My wife uses CeraV and sometimes wears those gloves and she has great hands

He is here near me in the Midwest. Our cold dry winters last maybe 2 weeks
Are you high right now ? 2 weeks ? Fuck, February alone takes like 4 months here.

When we moved here, my oldest asked me one day why they had school out noting that it never really gets cold here and there's basically no snow! The perspective of a child born in the North!

I felt that way at the time, but now I'm acclimated. (To make it really weird, I grew up in TX so got the flip side of that experience.)

Jack-off w/ both hands & 10W 30.

Something I should have added earlier, chronic dry and cracked hands can be a symptom of diabetes. I’d have you blood sugar checked.

Stop biting your nails. Get a manicure. Lotion your hands. Use lighter strings. Leave that nail a bit longer. Your nails in general are way too short

My right thumb will split like yours, but only when I cut the nail too short. I have to intentionally leave that nail a bit longer. I work on and play guitars for 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I bought one of those electric callus removers, I'll spend about 20+ minutes at the end of the week scrubbing calluses off. My calluses will catch on strings on my left and and specifically on my right thumb when I pinch harmonic.

Soft hands have become a meme, but it's nice to not have skin flakes catching on guitar strings and females generally like it more if your hands are soft on their soft areas. Win/Win.

Take care of your dickskinners so your dickskinners can take care of you

My brother in Christ I think you are in denial about this
I like when you talk like this.

I don't like reading threads about men using hand lotion. This place has gone soft. Waiting for the old head to say he uses Sarna even though it stinks up the whole house.

My advice is catch bass, and crappie, and they somehow form a protective layer on your fingers

Everybody's different. Life on a farm with a full-functioning machine shop means my hands have always been in all manners of nasty stuff since childhood, and I always had rashes and splits. Dermatologists were little help. I've tried nearly every topical application, both prescription and OTC, and personally find CeraVe Itch Relief Mosturizing Lotion and Trader Joe's Head to Toe Balm to be somewhat helpful.

BUT, don't overlook internal drivers of skin health. What was finally the One Big Thing for me was cutting Peanuts out of my diet. Allergy tests had only showed "slight sensitivity" to peanuts but when I started actively avoiding them everything changed. I still have heavy callouses on my hands and all my fingers, a couple fingers still snag fabrics like they're tipped with Velcro. ...But my constant battle with splits is completely gone. Good luck on your journey.

So what is the consensus? Lotion or no lotion?

I don't use lotion necessarily. But the worst my fingers get is from either shoveling rock or smallmouth fishing (they have small teeth).

Maybe I was high

But compared to South Dakota - we have mild winters IMO. Sure we have some sub freezing times that lasted for several weeks but there is always a break coming right around to corner, which is what I like about the central midwest. Spent lots of time in KC as well as MN.

“gloves in a bottle” has helped many of us in the flooring industry. Learned about it from an old mechanic, & passed it along to our trade. https://a.co/d/056lHMEg

I hate to say this but one of my friends has cracks like that all over his fingers/palms & nothing has given him relief. Too stubborn to go to a dermatologist..

Compared to Siberia, S. Dakota has mild winters. 🤣

I have nothing to say about lotion. Use it if you want. It doesn’t make you less of a man. 😊
