So, I'm working on being a pedal steel player. Therefore, purposely bought a 1980 Fender Twin Reverb 135 watt ultralinear transformer model.

I actually like how it doesn't break up in the power amp section for what I'm doing with it.

But, I don't like the master volume/pull for overdrive circuit. I think wiring it for 6550's would make sense too.

I'm envisioning a 6550 driven ultralinear transformer 135 watt power section with a AB763 preamp wiring. I think it is crazy enough to work. Does anyone have insight on how hard it would be to do this? It is possible or crazy talk? Any deep Fender gurus, please chime in!

Any other ideas on how to optimize the circuitry for ultimate clean and powerful tone? I already have speaker plans. bwoooo hahaha! Thanks!

I know it’s been 8 years but did you end up doing it?

I have a 135w converted to a pair of Svetlana 6550.
2 Channels +tube overdrive, Celestions, fx loop, no tremolo, Hammond reverb tank on both channels.
It’s been a hard amp to dial in, took many techs to make it great.

To me, the 6550 made the amp less thick, less woolly. More focused and direct.
