I think the only thing that ive come back to in the last 10 years is the old stock pedals. I've been pretty consistent with my amplifiers and guitars since day one, but i do remember dumping all my pedals and doing the digital rack mount stuff to only come back full circle to the old basic stuff again. Thats not to say if I ever played through a guy like Zach's state of the art rack I wouldnt be inspired and catch the virus again!  ..actually my next evolution is using the old pedals but with a modern loop switcher because my old ass can't tap dance anymore and i end breaking knobs and tripping all over the place on stage.

now I would expect (Joe) barzini at this point to chime in with a twisted photoshop of some sort busting my chops...

I forgot to mention this too. I've gone through dozens of booteek pedals and I was looking at my small board last night. Three Boss pedals and a Keeley TS-9 and Fulldrive II. I still stick with the higher end dirt pedals (because they typically sound better) but for delays and a chorus or wah. Just typical junk.

yep. exactly, good choice of OD's! I finally just retired my echoplex because it was becoming really tempermental, so the Flashback TC pedal is really the only newer pedal on my board. I think CUSAK v2 screamer OD maybe the only booteek pedal i use for drive...then again, that will probably change in 2 weeks and go back to my stock SD-1 or DOD grey 250 pedal

The thought of you doing a demo of the CCV at TM with some serious sauce in the loop has me thinking some Barzini thoughts.

Would be epic

oh God, i'd be live bait for DB if that were to happen

played though crap/semi crap gear most of my life, including the short time i played as a pro. (think playing bass though a marshall jcm800 stack, not exactly the correct set up for a ski circuit gig playing covers 5 nights a week)

started buying amps in '05. the first new amps i bought were also crappy (randall v2 anyone? i thought not). guess it takes time to unlearn crappy tone.

from there i have bought all sorts of cool new amps. marshall, mesa, engl, laboga, diamond, mako, vht, etc. i love them all. they all have a different favor. and mixing and matching them, running 3 or 4 at once is awesome. it's like an orgy with blondes, brunettes, red heads all at my finger tips. would never go back to just one.

the only full-circle i came around to was going from rack gear in the '90's back to the gate/head/cab thing. i just got sick of programming effects patches i would never use. thrash doesn't use effects much. and hauling around a rack that takes 3 people to move gets stupid when you get old. still have some great rack gear in boxes (waterproof) in the barn out back. i outta bust out the 2290 and eventide and sell them, but i can't seem to let anything go. i just keep buying stuff.

i should note i had amp buying issues before i joined this forum. i'm not really a tone chaser, as i have the tone i like now. i just like having a new toy every couple of months.

For me I was pretty fortunate to have had a good sounding 72 Marshall when I started. It was modded already and there were not that many pedals to choose from, so luck of the draw was the SD-1. The only thing was it was alittle loose for me and I wanted to be able to add some fx. The tone and feel were pretty easy to achieve, just not the fx. That took a bit of a journey, but the basic tweaked plexi type voice has been the constant.

Went from the one amp /pedal to a whole Marshall based slaved stereo rig (which was the ultimate for me). Then how do I scale it down and make it easier to move/setup/tear down. That led me to my Wizard head and a pedalboard. Perfect for live for me, but the pedalboard is alittle too big...so now trying to scale the pedalboard down. :)

So for live its the Wizard rig and recording its my old trusty plexi. :)

Ive struggled with this for a long time now and it is true, ive come full circle.

I started out with Marshalls and hated every minute of it , so I moved onto the Modded Marshalls and it still was just ok. Then I got hipped to the Boogie Mark series and loved them for many years but as soon as I switched to the Boogies, the music style changed and I was sent packing. I Came back to playing live after a long layoff, started out with the Boogies and then went digital because It was easier and I was to lazy to carry an amp and effects rig. The Tone was ok but after landing some really killer gigs, the digital thing was just ok. It seemed that I had good tone but there was just something missing and everytime I played a show with a guy playing through a tube amp, it just kicked my dick in the dirt. END OF DISCUSSION FOR ME. YMMV.

Now here is where it gets very interesting. Everytime Ive talken the boogie into a studio and played against a guy piping through a Marshall I got eaten alive. It was ok on its own, amazing actually and the tone is very good when Im playing as a single guitarist, but whenever I got paired with a guy playing through a GOOD Marshall it has been my experiance that ive gotten eaten alive. I just saw this happen YET AGAIN with a guy who borrowed my MKIV for a gig. He came on sounded cool and then another band came on after him and the tone dusted what we had and it was a marshall/pedal combo.

Needless to say, Ive come full circle and I would not have believed it. I'm back with a Fortin modded Marshall and sometimes I even use a stock 2205 and a Few pedals and now I'm the guy killing the PA. This is the shit that I had to go through in order to see what really works for me. At the end of the Day, I could use my MKIV and get a killer tone but my Fortin or stock 2205 kills in a band situation and I thought Id never in million years go back to what I started out on. Now, to end my Rant........The Marshalls that I have access to now are WAY more consistent to the ones ive had in the 80's. People can tell me I'm smoking crack but I have live recordings of many bands from back in the day and 9 out of 10 played Marshalls and there tone sucked ass. The older more seasoned guys had the tone that used to escaped me but now Im pretty much on point.

Still love the boogs and they kill, but it has been my experiance that nothing cuts like the marshalls/modded Marshalls.

all the best!

I went through the whole boutique pedal stage too. I had this mentality that if I was going to buy a phaser I was going to buy the best phaser out there, only to learn that a boring old Phase 90 sounded better. That experience repeated itself with numerous pedals.

Now, the closest thing I have to boutique is a Fulldrive 2... and you can buy them at most decent guitar shops these days.

Who said Rectos suck? I want names. :gethim:

I started reading internet forums at around the same time that nu-metal had just passed it's peak, so everyone had a hate on for anything associated with the genre.

It was also around the time that the mallcore scene was really heating up with a constant parade of flavour of the month high gainers that supposedly "slayed" whatever amp was "slaying" the Recto 3 days prior...

Fun times.

i'm still searching for a 2/3 channel amp that delivers the goods so to speak

contemplating trying a h&k statesman head i used to own again, i did like the tone from what i recall but after 8-9months the footswitch pop was stupidly loud and i had picked up a boogie lonestar...

given the time i've spent on my pedalboard, the pod hd500 through the blackstar ht-5 into a 2x12 at home sounds frikkin amazing, easy switching as well

80's-Marshall
90's-Boogie
95 through 05 didn't play
2006 through present tried them all and as I've said before, for the 1st timr I am so happy with my modded Marshall. It's really a great feeling to not get up every morning and check the classfieds several times a day to look for my possible new amp!
