Finish Repair or total Refin on PRS

So a while back I completely messed up the finish on the back of my McCarty. There is a spot abput 3 by 5 inches where the finish got eaten into.
PRS quoted 1500 for a total refinish. I can't justify that expense. I don't play the guitar much and I am ima weird spot with it where I can't sell it as is and can't justify dumping almost what I paid into it for refinish.
Does anyone know what someone like Wilkins typically charges for a refin and do they possibly do repairs instead of the whole thing?

Of COURSE you can sell it as is. Pics? There are plenty of folks that don't mind finish issues if they are not on the face of the guitar. Now if you mean you can not get top dollar for it, that's a whole other thing.

The problem with PRS in general is they are hard to sell. Spending any money on a refinish wouldn't be worth it. Better to lower the sale price if you want to move it. You'll be money ahead.

How about a pic of the entire back and side of the guitar?

I bet someone will take it. Heck, we have people that pay extra for "relic"

 Don't sweat it. Rock out and play it like it was rented

This is likely what I will continue to do. I just get slightly annoyed once in a while and think about what I can do with it.
I pretty much know the answer.

Wait, did I miss something here? Is there a fucking hole through the body or something that it would cost $1500 to refinish? That's the cost of a fairly nice guitar just for a paint job. You must have one of those lawyer specials with the Brazillian rosewood, 10 top, bird inlay, modern eagle whatever or something because I'm guessing the new paint job is only a fraction of what the guitar costs. That's some crazy shit man.

They probably justify the price because doing the refinish takes a guy off building/finishing another McCarty. Still a ridiculous price. I emailed PRS PTC a few months ago about changing the fret board to maple and putting stainless steel frets on my CU24, they refused to do it. :aww: Probably would have been $1500+ for that job as well.

Fuck that. PRS is a thing of the past as far as I'm concerned. There are so many great, more affordable builders these days. You can build an exotic Warmoth PRS of your choice WITH stainless steel frets that PRS refuses to use for 1/4 the cost of one of their lawyer specials.

Yeah, PRS is so yesterday. Terrible company doing nothing for guitar players. High prices, etc. With your thinking and that business model in 100 years they should be revered like Gibson. :jerkit:

We get it, you can't afford one so the company must be trash.

Gibson was around way before PRS ever was. They were one of the two original big names of the entire industry, and still is. In case you haven't noticed, PRS couldn't survive just making guitars for lawyers and bankers, so they've had ever-expanding lines of more affordable models so they can compete in the market. A lot of builders are catching on and some are starting to catch up, so there will be a reckoning on the market with PRS sooner or later.

With that simpleton logic of yours, you actually think I said PRS is trash.

Everyone seems to agree $1500 they quoted for the refin is very high, but what is reasonable? That was part of the point of my post. What are my options and what should the ballpark cost be?

The McCarty is a set neck and they did state it would be a complete strip and refinish. I figured it would be expensive, but did think it was a bit much even w/out any reference.

The guitar plays and sounds great. I just don't have much of a use for it at the moment. I have two Axcess' that I lean on because I need the trem. I am not hot to sell the PRS, but if it didn't have this issue and I could sell it for the going market price I probably would so that I could try out another amp.
It is what it is...I'll just hang on to it and enjoy playing it when I find time to break it out at home.
