Everyone seems to agree $1500 they quoted for the refin is very high, but what is reasonable? That was part of the point of my post. What are my options and what should the ballpark cost be?

The McCarty is a set neck and they did state it would be a complete strip and refinish. I figured it would be expensive, but did think it was a bit much even w/out any reference.

The guitar plays and sounds great. I just don't have much of a use for it at the moment. I have two Axcess' that I lean on because I need the trem. I am not hot to sell the PRS, but if it didn't have this issue and I could sell it for the going market price I probably would so that I could try out another amp.
It is what it is...I'll just hang on to it and enjoy playing it when I find time to break it out at home.

I guess it really comes down to what you consider reasonable, the way I look at it is guitars at the price point of a core PRS are going to cost more to do work on than your average bolt on neck guitar. A paint job on a Ford Mustang is significantly cheaper than a Ferrari ;) . You can talk to the PTC about how their refinish process works, as they actually spend quite a significant amount of time prepping, sanding, fixing other imperfections, and finally spraying the guitar and slapping their warranty on the new finish. You'll find that their refinish process is much more involved than some other guitar manufacturers, and for some its too much, for others its not. As far as PTC references go, take a stroll through the PRS forums, some of they work they do is pretty incredible!

If you have no plans to part with the guitar, I say turn it into a workhorse guitar, don't worry that its on its way to being a legit relic!
