The amp sounds great...much more "vintagey" than I expected...very cool. Does it do higher gain stuff as well?

Well, the intro is with the volume knob rolled back 60%, so that explains that. There is quite a bit more gain on tap if you want it, but I thought the fast rhythm part at the end sounded pretty gainy. Curt thought it had too much... Definitely can get more gain if you want it.

HA! He was using more gain on this than a stock 800.

If you are looking for 5150 red channel gain, this isn't the amp for you...

Curt is always nailing us east coast guys regarding gain, since I cannot stand toe to toe with him chops wise I have to hit and run when I can

I like the levels I am hearing

Man that amp sounds mean!
What are you playing through these days Alex?
Nothing as nice as you Paul!
A lot of my stuff got ripped off while it was in storage a few years back. (Don't even wanna list it, I'll cry  )
Since I'm not gigging right now, just demoing stuff out for fun, mainly an AxeFx II direct through a pair of my monitors. (I know, I know, but it works and it's convenient for now!)
Sometimes I fire up my little ampeg reverb-rocket. I have an old (I think 70's?) 100 watt bone-stock superlead too, but I don't get a chance to crank it up too much. Those two were the only ones not in storage at the time, so at least I still have them. :)

Sorry for the thread hijack guys!
Sort of back on topic, the Cherry Bomb, Dirty Shirley, and BE or HBE are all on the short list for my next "real" amp. Just have some stuff I need for the mastering business first. I need to stop listening to clips by Chubtone and Reza before my GAS makes me change my priorities!

how about a effects free dry sample?

That's how I sent it to Steve. Steve knew the east coast guys would probably keel over dead if he posted a bone dry clip so he put some reverb and delay on it. The clip sounds really good dry too, just doesn't sound "finished".

I play dry all the time so that sounds normal to me. When Steve threw a Strymon El Capistan in the loop one day while we were playing this amp, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Who would have ever thought of putting delay on your sound WHILE you are playing? I mean, I have an El Capistan too, I just thought that I should only pull it out for special occasions. I don't want to wear it out. It has 15 minutes use on it already in the year and a half I have owned it.

To be honest though, I really like playing dry. I like the immediacy and click of that pick hitting the strings and with a delay, I don't play anywhere near as clean. Of course I can't tell if I'm not playing as clean, I'm just hearing notes come out of my amp that I know I wasn't responsible for and I feel like a cheater. :D

Your amp would be more my thing. IMHO an amp sounds soooooooo much better not all gained out and compressed to shit. It allows the tone of the guitar to shine through far better. But you have to learn to play an amp set like that because the feel is definitely different. That's me though. YMMV

Come on now Scotty. I can't even remotely play an 800 without a boost. I get way more gain out of my Super Leads than I get out of my 800. :D

What is your setup used to record this clip? All my clips sound muffled compared to his and I use a plexi, GB cab, miced with a 57. I've got it one axis and close to the edge of the cap.

I am using an SM57 about an inch off the grill. It is miked on axis and is pointing right at the outside edge of the dustcap. I am playing LOUD. Really freaking loud. I also have a vintage API 312 Mic preamp into a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 interface. The only thing that is really drool-worthy or out of the ordinary is the API mic pre. And I was smart enough to ask my parents to get me that as a college graduation gift....... So lets just say I have had that for a long, long time. :D

What kind of mic pre do you have? I think a great mic preamp makes a difference, but shouldn't be the difference between a muffled sounding clip and one with substantially more clarity.

I'm just using an Edirol audio interface (which will be upgraded soon for other reasons), no mic pre.

Do you know anyone you could borrow a mic pre from and run that into the Edirol? The Focusrite I have has two decent mic pre's in it too and wasn't that expensive.

I don't know anyone, but the Focusrite's were a consideration because they have drivers for 64bit XP. I may go with them. Unless the Edirol is broken, I would think I'd still get something similar though, even if it wasn't the same quality. No matter where I put the mic though, I can't get the treble in that clip with my current setup. That Edirol has had issues though...so may be.

Your Edirol audio interface has mic pres built into it, they just aren't very high quality...

Good timing. I havent been on RT for a bit, busy with work and summer bike/racing stuff with the family. check in and find a Chubtone clip on d'Cherry Bomb!! Sweet!!! Good to see RT is heading in the right direction

nice work!
definitely hear the reedy marshall character preserved with a bit of the vhII honk and chirp.

curt how does it compare to the feel/sound of a splawn in person because that's also an amp similar to what i'm hearing on the clip.

i'd also like to hear how far the amp can swing set as clean as possible on the first channel to as meanly saturated and as cameron-like as it can get on the second channel.

Sounds good  very vintage in my ears!

I really like your "inside" work
