For 1979, this was beyond it's time! Every note (almost) picked!  Kinda makes Eruption seem tame, no? And he's 16 and playing with the original DLR   :

NO one can play Shawn Lane's shit. NO one.

but then that might be a case of "no one wants to" because no one knows who he is

My 16 year old is more badass than your 16 year old!

I'll take a 16 year old Yngwie over those two. That stuff was legendary.

Pretty much out shreds most of the 80's shredders 10 yrs early yet sees minimal fame

Lane was incredible no doubt but his music will never be what VH's is. Never went to a party and heard a tune Lane played on. Never turned on the radio and heard a Lane tune. If the measure of greatness is complexity then Lane is the man i suppose. I think for most complexity or difficulty is not the measuring stick. And then there is tone.

I thought we were just talking about "baddest mf'er on earth stuff" from way back, not commercial rock songwriting. I doubt you hear what Ed is playing in that first video at many parties either... ;) :D

No disrespect to Shawn Lane, but this just sounds like someone trying to play as many notes as possible with a complete disregard for musicality. It's like the guitar equivalent of Christina Aguilera moving through octaves and being annoying. I don't care for EVH, but the dude played songs, which is why he's famous.

No disrespect to your opinion as they are good points but STILL he was 16 yr's old and it was 1979, that in itself is impressive to me given the technique he displayed on this video.

His point is NOT good though because this is just a short guitar wank to show off between playing actual songs with Black Oak Arkansas. It is not meant to show musicality/songwriting whatever... That is why  15 seconds later he was probably playing "Jim Dandy", which was a hit song in the '70s...

It was inevitable, Steve. There's always one....

Lane was incredible. But I remember one night going out to bars with some friends and I threw Lanes Powers Of 10 CD on. Non musicians were in the car and Lanes music didnt last 20 seconds. Some of the verbal assaults....Get this gay elevator shit off, play something that doesnt sound like a mosquito etc.

Guys, I'm not looking to get into a pissing contest. I just had to get it off my chest after listening to that clip. It's amazing that he was able to do that at that age during that time. I will never be able to play like that, but then again, I really have no interest in playing like that either. To me, it's like what's the point? Listen, I love speed, flash, technique, volume swells, vibrato, bends, etc. as much as the next guy, but if it doesn't sound musical, what the fuck is the point other than stroking your own ego?

It reminds me of this:
