Lane was incredible. But I remember one night going out to bars with some friends and I threw Lanes Powers Of 10 CD on. Non musicians were in the car and Lanes music didnt last 20 seconds. Some of the verbal assaults....Get this gay elevator shit off, play something that doesnt sound like a mosquito etc.

true... happened to Holdsworth as well

For 1979, this was beyond it's time! Every note (almost) picked!  Kinda makes Eruption seem tame, no? And he's 16 and playing with the original DLR   :

No contest, in terms of guitar virtuosity. Shawn Lane was and always will be THE greatest shredder virtuoso.

Van Halen, sold a lot of records, got a lot more famous and more people were influenced by him, but there were and are a million cats that could play his shit etc. you even have 14 yr old girls nailing his licks.

NO one can play Shawn Lane's shit. NO one.

While I respect the guy's ability, he was faster than hell...but his playing wasn't all that memorable. There are alot of guys that can play a million miles an hour, but very few that can do that and say something worthwhile with their guitar at the same time, EVH was one of those few, and I never even liked Van Halen. The vocals killed the music for me. Gotta give Eddie credit though, he had talent, and he was a good songwriter on top of that. Shawn Lane was purely a technician IMO... He didn't have any composition skill.

Lane was incredible no doubt but his music will never be what VH's is. Never went to a party and heard a tune Lane played on. Never turned on the radio and heard a Lane tune. If the measure of greatness is complexity then Lane is the man i suppose. I think for most complexity or difficulty is not the measuring stick. And then there is tone.
 Ed's talent lies in being a guitar virtuoso within a very well written, catchy tune, cross playing with Rhythm, leads, hooks, etc. This ability, aside from his playing, is a talent all it's own not many guitar greats of this genre can compete with.
