I need to get one for recording and was wondering what you guys use?

I am pretty much set on a Fender P-Bass (love the look and all my favorite bassists use them).
I am wondering if the MIM are decent or if I should get a MIJ from Ishibashi. I can get one from them for about 500$ shipped

I use a Conklin GT5 but I'd love to pickup a P or Jazz bass too.

If you can invest the time to go out and play all the MIM P's you can get your hands on, then you may be able to find one that's decent, otherwise I'd just go the $500 MIJ route.

ive got a MIM J Bass thats a really good instrument. my buddy used it to record most of the bass parts on the last Lucian Scott album and he used a 60 something J bass for some of it...he said my bass sounded and played better than the vintage instrument! LOL

id go play a few if i were you, and see what you can find. you might find a really awesome one for cheap :)

I've got a Washburn ... not top notch ... but not super cheap ..

The neck is dead on .. and it's got a one big fat active Humbucker ... works well .

I grabbed it for 350 .. I think .... few years back

I tried to find a Steve Harris sig on the 'Bay...but no luck

I have an active/passive Cort bass and a passive Yamaha fretless bass. Both cheap but they play and sound great...all I need for writing.
You don't need to blow a lot of dough on a bass.
My bass player has a Fender P bass and a Fender Jazz and he likes my Cort a lot for recording. Last time he brought his Jazz bass he ended up just using the $400 Cort.

I've been using an Epiphone Thunderbird with moderate success and lots of fun.

The cheap answers are plentiful...

SX Jazz from Rondo
Peavey T-40
Cort Curbow

Just to name a few, all under $300.

I won't knowingly buy another item from Cort. Cort is the distributor for the GT5 I have an their support is by far the worst I have ever encountered to the point that no resolution was reached. I finally gave up on them and vowed to let others know how lousy Cort's support model is.

Your Cort bass blows hummingbird beaks.

It's great. :dunno:

You can find plenty of decent quality MIM basses, I used to own one. However, much the same as MIM guitars, you do have to cherry pick!

If you can spend a bit more check out the fender Geddy lee jazz, its made in Japan. I really love mine.

I find the J bass to be more versatile than the P bass, but it really depends on what you are going for. Its hard to beat the punch of a P bass.

Rondo music has some nice SX Jazz and P bass clones....

I have two basses that are great to play and sound awesome recorded. They're Lakland Skyline basses. I have a 55-01 and a 44-01. They sound similar to a Fender Jazz bass, but they have Bartolini pickups and the active preamp can be bypassed by pulling up the volume knob. The neck is closer to a Fender P bass, and the string spacing is very natural. You can find them used for a good price. I would suggest checking them out.

+1 on the Lakland Skyline series. You can find 55-01 for under $500 all day.

Another good option is the G&L L-2500 tribute. Great bass.
Again, Guild Pilot bass, under $500, absolutely a great bass, hello Jaco.

I got a new Ernie Ball Musicman duel pickup 5 string Stingray about 2-3 months ago. It looks great, plays great, sounds great, feels great and gets lots of tones... :inlove: :inlove: :inlove:
