Yeah myself included. :D
Anyhow....was just thinking of some of the other bands I listened to back in the 80's BESIDES Metal/Hair Metal/Thrash or Hard Rock......

Few bands come to mind. And be honest here...

Duran Duran
Flock of Seagulls
Pat Benatar
Rick Springfield
.38 Special
The Cars
Huey Lewis and the news

Probably quite a bit more.
Still great music that I like to check out on the 80's channel on satellite radio.
Ah.... those were the days. :D

I listened to and played some swing (jazz) with a friend back then. Wish I didn't stop... My chord vocabulary was pretty good for a time and I was learning to sight read. Use it or lose it.

Wilson Phillips
Debbie Gibson
(Hey, I was a kid- easily influenced by MTV pop:))

Hall & Oates
INXS (still really dig them)

I got into jazz a little later on. Probably late 90's when I stopped playing guitar. Took a nice 10 year break from it.
Use it or lose it as you put it.
I still havent found it yet.

Damn Bob....your digging up some old memories.
Back in 1988 I was big into the 50s' music. Beach Boys Dion Buddy Holly.....loved it.
My classmates thought I was a freak. I would listen to that in my car and play Metallica and Anthrax on my guitar.

Bryan Adams (still listen to him). Reckless is one of my favorite all time albums.

Pretty much everything listed above. IDK if you'd count Journey,Night Ranger, Styx, REO as hard rock but I constantly listened to them. Plus, towards the late 80s, ....um...Richard Marx :D

Genesis Invisible touch was a great Tape as well.
Mike and the Mechanics.....Yeah....thats the stuff! :D

Cant forget the Go-Gos!!

And that Title track "into the fire" by Bryan Adams....Classic stuff there.
