Found a 1973 Twin Reverb for cheap...

got it for $170.....speakers are not stock, grill isn't either.....faceplate has some bending and fading.Tubes are all RCA and westinghouse in power section.....Now the bad news is that it has very low volume....what could be the culprit? Do you guys think it was a good deal after all? :scared:
 
If you can get it running without too much money its a great deal. That amp should be very very loud when running correctly. With a tube amp, you gotta start trouble shooting with replacing the tubes with known good ones. Go from there.
 
replaced all preamp tubes, but have no extra power tubes at the moment...amp seems a lot louder now but still low volume compared to how it should sound like.Could that be caused by old power tubes? i think they had never been replaced(marked westinghouse, USSR).....i salvaged 4 rca 12ax7 and 7025 tubes...and one at7...there was another at7 but that one had apparently lost vacuum
 
also checked speakers impedance at the plug and its 15 ohm...i guess that also affects volume?
 
Clean the pots & jacks with spray cleaner. I have seen it work a few times. Spray on and turn all the way on & off at least ten times.

Is both channels real low volume ?
 
reverb channel starts making excessive noise when turning up the chan volume.....also this amp has been modded apparently...it has a jack in the back to the far right which is marked pwr in then next to it a small flip switch then an effects loop apparently....i dont think this came stock in this amp
 
The 2x12 combo Twins weigh as much as a 4x12 cab i swear, got rid of mine for that reason.
 
this one doesn't have stock speakers....it has 1 yamaha ja3059 and some other unlabeled speaker
 
Sounds like you have your work cut out for your on this one. If it were me, at this point I'd be giving it to a professional and let them tell you where you stand.
 
Just about no amps had effects loops back then.
 
I picked up mine which was a 78 for $220 but it worked fine. Many of these are missing their original jbl speakers as many like them so guys swap them out and sell separate. Mine was the 135 watt version with the push pull master volume. I much prefer the 80 watt older type which yours probably is. Good news is that you can probably fix yours and or reverse mods easily as these were all hand wired which makes repair work easier.
 
Sam Ash had a Fender 'Concert' combo for $200.00, and I passed it up! :doh:
 
try pulling the inner 2 or outer 2 power tubes..

halve the ohms switch though.


15 ohms is fine. it'll run 16. no worries there.
