This guy's channel has some killer vids I've never seen before. Audio is killer. That certain crunchy kerrang of the FenderBandmaster's does not seem to be present in this 1979 tour, so I would have to say it's all Marshall here in 1979 versus the 78 tour clip. Yes.... Mr. Hilligan the Fender Bandmaster's are definitely responsible for VH1 tone, either used as a reamping head or direct in run in parrallel with the 12301 Marshall.

Here the 1978 tour for comparison

I’d love to know what was done to those Fenders if they’re running in parallel with the Marshalls, if they’re part of a re-amping scheme or what the story is.

Sick!!! Good lord that was awesome. They were polished and great to see them getting along, etc.

If you look close at the 78 video here's what Ed has sitting on the floor that I can see. From left to right. Two Marshall Plexi heads stacked, One Fender Bandmaster(reverb) bigbox head on top of a Marshall Head in the middle, Two Fender Bandmaster regular heads stacked one on top of the other on the right.

Hearing the obvious difference in the tone in this above 78 tour vid and seeing all these Fender Bandmaster on stage. Ed could feasibly be running both the Marshall and the Fender Bandmaster Reverb head parallel in to both variaced then reamped by the two Fender Bandmasters on the right side of the stage.

Did they make 100 watt bandmasters?

More proof on how the 'bumblebee' guitar didn't really gel with Ed so well. Interesting to see how much stage time the dragon gets here!

I knew a guy years ago that had a SICK blackface Fender amp head that he had sent to Torres Engineering out in CA for mods. Now that I think about it, it really sounded like VH1 even though the guy couldn’t play VH type stuff to save his life, but the tone was there. I’m pretty sure it was a Bandmaster or a Bassman. This is NOT helping my GAS...

I've been down the Bassman road before using it to reamp my 68 variaced Plexi exact to Ed's setup. I'm thinking the bandmaster may be the amp preffered. I think the bandmaster had wider headboxes than the Bassmans so by the looks of it everything up there on stage looks to bandmasters to me unless someone can make out a bassman ID.

I think Jerry Cantrell used a BK butler tube overdrive OD pedal into a Fender Bassman for Facelift according to many sources. Remember Ed was into Ronnie Montroses tone and Ted Templeman produced Montrose's albums.

O.K. Here is my takeaway: 1) If you watch this video and then read the documentary book about DLR dumping a plate of food on Michael Anthony’s lap before he was unceremoniously ‘fired’ as an equal share member of this band, you just can’t believe it. M.A.’s high harmony vocals are worth 25% of the total royalties this band ever sold; 2) when in the hell did this band migrate from being young, mean, hungry, nasty bosses to being slapstick ‘caricatures’ of their former selves, with big foam hats, and too much to drink and smoke BEFORE the show rather than AFTER the show?

FWIW - I am the biggest VH fan ever. I only wish I would have been at the age and in the location to see the 78-81 shows live...

Eddie was a big Montrose fan so I’m sure that’s where the Bandmaster came into play

The last incarnation of the VH1 lore explored on Metroamp was the picture of Pat Badger(Extreme) bass player in a picture with Ed's 12301 Plexi on top of a Marshall PA amp. According to Badger that amp was used to reamp Ed's famous 12301 for VH1 tones. I have never seen that Marshall PA amp ever pictured on stage with ED at least pics they have released for public consumption. I tried to post links to Metroamp but the forum is down again for some reason, hopefully George hasn't called it quits but I knew he announced his business was hurting.

That may be true about the Marshall PA amp.... Mr Twistyneck found and bought a Marshall PA said it sounds pretty good, but personally that video and the zingy, tight, crunchy, fender clarity and grind that I hear in that 78 tour video showing all those bandmasters tells me what I think at least alot of the songs on VH1 were recorded with.

When you listen to the VHII tour of 1979 I hear VHII only, that distinct tonal qualities of VH1 is not present in that video, period case closed.
Imagine this tone with a really good OD pedal into it............................................. the guitar has P-90's in it even.

All I know is that you can see why Black Sabbath hated following these guys.

This is killer. I saw them on April 8th 79, just days after this show. It was stupid good and they blew Aerosmith off the stage.
