Holy blast from the past!! LMAO!! I never got his tapes but I
I had the star lick Tape.... You know The one where they yelled out...LICK NUMBER ONE and then they proceeded to play a lick that you would never use and they wuld play it at warp speed and then they would then say LICK NUMBER ONE>>>SLOW and then they would proceed to play the same lick it maybe 1/10th slower :hys:

What a useless piece of crap it was! Out of 30-40 licks there were maybe two that I liked and they never told you how to use them in a song context :hys:
Yeah that was them!! The Star Lick tapes!
I had the EVH ones and learned Solos for Beat it and Aint talking bout love.
I was the Envy of everyone in the Junior high!!

My buddy had the Rhoads tape. I remember learning the first lick to the "I Don't Know" solo. I thought it was pure magic.
I also bought and still have one of the Dr. Licks book, with just solos trancribed, no chords, just solos. It had some Maiden, Ozzy, Def Lepard and for the old guys, Eric Clapton and some others I can't remember.

Dr. Licks! I think 70strathead had one of his books/tapes on Yngwie. Dr. Licks did a slow motion low E divebomb so you could get it just right

On man that's right i remember those Dirty Dr. Licks tapes.. I also remember the note-for-note Jim Gleason tapes that had all the Van Halen stuff..that was a BIG deal back then. The best tool I remember buying back then to slow things down was an old Marantz tape machine, it didnt keep the same pitch though, but was the greatest for transcribing stuff.

I used to just slow my record player down to 16 and drop the needle back down. I got really good at judging the right place...

Ruined a couple of "Fair Warning" LPs doing that and learned pretty much nothing anyway...

I bought a copy of the 1983 course a couple of days after Chubtone's post and it finally arrived yesterday. To my surprise, there were a couple EVH licks that I had yet to steal

Something that I found really interesting is a PDF with a collection of Doug's newsletters from the '80s. Like most of you guys I love '80s rock but I was born in 1988 and didn't get a chance to experience it. The newsletters gave some real insight to what it was like back then.

There is one newsletter that goes over your image, how to take care of your hair, and what clothes to buy. Someone asked:
What kind of eyeliner do you recommend? Mine runs after about twenty minutes, it looks ridiculous.

I never did buy those, I was afraid they wouldn't be worth it. I guess I was jaded by ads in comic books that sounded great, but only lead to disappointment. Take Sea Monkeys or X-Ray glasses, for example...

Yeah when gear didn't matter... the latest copy of Guitar For The Practicing Musician was all you needed... LOL! :D
I used to hit the magazine rack every month for the latest issue of GFTPM... It was the best teacher I could find in what was the Tatooine of Florida cities. Sebring, 'The Hub Of Florida.' Take all of the great places in Florida, draw lines connecting them, and there is Sebring at the intersection: Equidistantly far from anywhere worth being. Going to Thoroughbred in Tamp was like a holy pilgrimage...

All those were great, and Guitar For the Practicing Musician? what a wealth of knowledge, Dimebag, Skolnick. Now its the MI series for soloing in conjunction with an instructor who did the GIT thing back in the late 80's, (am an idiot when it comes to learning theory) Hes a great guy and was being too kind to me, so now I have him talking down to me like the idiot I am and its actually helping. "1E&A2&....no no no, stop stop stop....again but like this."

I think next week he's bringing in the steel edged ruler :aww:
