Framus Cobra a copy of a Recto?

I read over at the Fractal Audio forum that Cliff said the Framus Cobra is a blatant copy of a Rectifier.
How true is this? I was very interested in trying out a Cobra, but I have hated every Recto I have played.

The cobra sounds like what a recto should have sounded like...it is tighter, saturated, full of bottom end and clarity unlike a recto.

Just read up on it. PM me if you have any questions as I was a former owner.

did you try boosting the recto and perhaps running it with el34s? Those two things usually tighten up the flub and remove some of the fizz people don't like from a stock recto.

FWIW

recto is a copy of the SLO......

SLO circuit with the tonestack in the location of the effects loop....

That's true,Recto is a copy of an SLO. When Recto's first came out I remember the store owner telling me,he was/is a Soldano freak and told me it was a meaner version of the SLO. At the time. And EL 34's do tighten up the flop of the recto, and lots of practice.

almost all Mesa's are very, very hard to dial in. I am personally not a huge fan but I have heard a few over the years that got killer tones out of them.

The Cobra's Lead channel is like a perfected Recto tone.....and then you get the bonus Crunch Channel which is like the most massive jcm800 you can think of mixed with the low end of a recto but, super super fucking tight and tons of pissed off mids.

The Cobra is my favorite amp for metal, only a few other amps come close.

I'm a Dual Rectifier FREAK and I must say while I got a pretty good tone with the Framus in the video, I still prefer a boosted Dual Rectifier. I think it suits my sound better.
With that said the Cobra is a monster.

So it sounds like a Rev C recto then?

Except the clean channel is unusable on a early recto.

I have no idea what the clean channel is like on a cobra...

CObra clean channel is supposed to be a fender bassman copy...

The SLO, Cobra, Rectifier, and 5150 all share a lot in common. None are exactly the same. The Cobra has a very different EQ circuit.

Can a Cobra get the variety of sounds that a Recto can? Or is it more focused on perfecting an idealized version of the 'Recto' sound?

The Cobra is a ripoff of a Dual Rec is a ripoff of an SLO is a ripoff of a JCM800 is a modification of a JTM45 is a ripoff of a Tweed Bassman is a ripoff of the RCA Tube Designer's Handbook.

There's not a single amp out there that isn't a ripoff of something else.
Unless it's 100% identical, it's not a ripoff; it's just progress.

lol

imagine Killswitch Engage playing through Bassmans, SRV playing through a Cobra

The Cobra's lead channel is a better recto, crunch channel is the same as the lead channel, except that it has a touch less compression and not nearly as much gain. The clean is one of the best cleans in a metal amp.

This guy is pretty much right...the Crunch is middier as well :)

Hey man, how do you like your CLX compared to your Cobra?

The Cobra is like my favorite Metal amp of all time but....I've gone rack now and I'm more of a hard rock/metal player so, I'm really leaning towards finding a VHT GP3 to run alongside my Mak4 and into my VHT 2/50/2

that RCA book is over 30 chapters long and filled with awsome information. it is one hell of a read though. the bible of tube radios - the third edition is the edition i have and was wrote in 1959

you dont understand, however, that Mike Soldano invented the SLO design first - a one off that no one else had done. not marshall, fender, or anyone.

same as fortin and DAR - complete one off designs from their own engineering backgrounds.

back to the SLO - the amplifiers that Jerry listed are rip-offs of the SLO design.

a SLO does not resemble a marshall and i do not care what you say, there is nothing identical in design at all. not even the same tube stages and output tube design.

AFA the companies that copied the SLO - they are all identical to a T except for build quality, HT/B+, and their tonestacks.

thats it.

That Recto clip brought the pain

It had that nearly out of control sort of beast on a chain vibe. Perfect for the track played. The fizz, chainsaw buzz, all part of that evil rip you face off voicing.

Again, thx Ola for the great clips.
