I've got no noise issues with my amp on any setting with the gain cranked. In fact, I'd say it's pretty much dead quiet. I did notice on another Friedman mod I had, on the HBE setting there was some added noise with the extra preamp tube though.

 Thats weird, mine is pretty quiet with the gain cranked

I think you would find the amp build from Dave to be much more quiet than a modded Marshall. HBE cranked is going to of course give some noise, but nothing a gate won't keep away. I can't imagine playing on it with the HBE preamp dimed though. It is way too much and more than you would need.

I like the BE gain around 09:00 - 10:00 for some good driven Plexi (and yes, lots of mids and presence). On the HBE channel, the gain set about 12:00 will get in big hair land with plenty of saturation and sustain. Enough to make you want to put on some leotards. :D

The noise level is nil at these levels as long as you aren't 5' from the amp and turned toward it. I usually just kick a gate on and it takes away the tendencies.

i've owned/own two friedman amps and they were both only sorta noisy on the HBE mode with the gain all the way up,which i never played it that way anyways.the BE & C45 modes were dead-quiet with the gain knob cranked....with that said,i've owned/own two cameron jose-hg amps and one was pretty noisy, the other is really quiet....so,go figure? :) i dont like the noise factor, but it's gonna be an inherant factor of HIGH gain circuits.i dont care for noise gates,at all.

The filtering comment is wrong. If the mods hummed it would be because of the tube heaters and not the filtering. Most of the time I use dc for the heaters to eliminate it. Preamp tubes these days suck. Not all the amps I mod have dc for the heaters so if some one changes the tubes they could become noisey etc.

We have a slew of them at both my studios and I don't find any of them noisy. Not any noisier then any cranked Marshall.

Yup. You can use in a super high gain layout w/ 4 ECCs (preamp only, not the PI) and filter them with a single 22µF.
I know some (pro) guys are doing this.
Hum is caused by filaments and/or grounding. The problem with many older Marshalls is, that they don't follow a good star-grounding, but use the chassis . . .
Elevating the heaters can help (if you don't want to install regulated DC heaters) and optimizing the grounding.

Olaf,

Have you ever heard of boards absorbing moisture and retaining moisture when exposed to humid climates and causing hum....especially older amps?

Steve

Moisture is a problem mostly with older Fender amps, where you can get parasitic things everywhere. You can find that often in amps, where the board is "paper"-like. I had a super old (60s) Princeton Reverb here, who had this problem (humidity and volts on the board all over the place). The board isn't insulating anymore - thats really bad, you know . . .

The solutions were either to use a hair-fan (is that the correct word?) every now and then - or the "modern" standard FR4 material and a fully rebuilt board.

Well yes that could be done but is really not needed. Tried this and it does nothing as far as the hum goes. Dc heaters fixes the hum and or the right preamp tubes. When decoupling the stage it changes the tone a lot and i chose not to do it. Really though most people don't even use the HBE at all. The production amps are quiet.

Anyone say Friedman Amps?

I have played a few Friedman "kitchen sink" and "Brown Eye" modded amps that sound great...but were pretty noisy when turning up the gain on the BE and HBE. I know the Marsha amp (now called Friedman) has reduced filtering...16uf on the preamp for 4 preamp tubes. 4 preamp tubes are noisy with 50uf... Can anyone comment on the noise/hiss of the Marsha when using the HBE with Jose master?

I dont notice any unusual noise with my Marsha. It's not Herbert amounts of gain
so I don't think it gets noisy like that when gained up. Not that Herbies are noisy but ya get what I'm sayin'.
I'd say the Marsha is actually below average in the noise depot, even with HBE.
It's very controllable and not a squealer.

I never crank the gain on mine, don't need to. But at pretty high gain levels, it's not noisy at all ....

I had a KS Marshall and now have a Marsha...the Marsha is definitely quieter than my old amp.
