Good morning fellow RT'ers!

I just happened to have two Legendary Tones mods on-hand and thought it would be fun to put them in my 1983 Marshall 2204 w/ a Friedman Naked mod. I had a "Naked+" 4-stage in the past and wondered if this would replicate that sound. I also just thought it would be cool to add a little more juice to the Naked and see what happened.

You can check it out in a full mix and solo in the video.

As always, I would love your feedback/thoughts/opinions/jokes etc.

Cheers friends! Enjoy.

Sweet amps man . But I don’t think I’d play of them again with that blue face their . I was playing my vh4 and was reminded of the glory
But good tones bro

I don't really need this with the Lynx 50 and 7 gain Stages..... Or maybe 8 gain Stages would be Even better

But some may want them to pretty much mod their amp and amps they may want more juice out of like a JCM800 or even a regular 6505.

I like the Mr.Scary. It just sounds more balanced. Great clips, great sound and great tones from the Marshall with Friedman Naked mods stock or otherwise with the extra mods *_*

Were you re-amping or something? You're plugged into the Marshall but none of the amps are on. Tones sound good though. I didn't really hear too much of a difference other than maybe slightly more kerrang with the red one, as you mentioned. Even compared to the "OG", not too much difference to be honest. Especially in the mix.

I used the BF VH4 in another video recently but I'm going to do a stand-alone before/after video on it when I do maintenance and re-tube it this summer.
Thanks about the tones too.

You made me have to go watch the video and look to see the power switches 😂

No re-amping. I think you're seeing the standby switch not the power switch. The power switch is beyond the frame just a tiny bit to the left.

I know it makes for a better comparison and I know it has important studio uses, but I don't care for re-amping all that much. I think there is value in adjusting your technique, whether consciously or unconsciously, based on the response of the rig (i.e., what the amp and speaker are "giving" you back). Not enough people talk about the effect tube amp response has on your playing and to me that's an important component, so I prefer not to re-amp; but, I have in one or two videos in the past where I wanted as direct of a comparison as possible.

I agree with you that the differences are very subtle. To me the OG actually takes up more space in the mix because the slight scoop gives it more width. The Mr. Scary sounds just a *tad* more saturated and compressed but I dig it too. You can really hear that in the riffing section.

In the future, I'd adjust the following, too:
  • Lower the mids by 2-3
  • Use a guitar that isn't so midrange heavy, especially for the riffing seciton
  • Take it easier with my right hand technique so I don't knock the open D string out of tune
  • Talk more about the response of each. The Hot Mod was a lot harder to play than the stock or Mr. Scary. The Mr. Scary had a great response that helped with the first riff. If you listen closely you can hear how my playing is kind of bouncing along with the compressed bass.
  • I forgot to talk about the guitar I'm using
  • I'd do one with a pedal too; to add to the comparison

Ohhhh so the Marshall is a modded amp. The "Naked" isn't the actual Friedman below it?

Correct. The Marshall to the left of my head is the one with the Naked mod that I am using throughout the video. The amp below it is a Friedman SS-100 (Steve Stevens Signature Amp).

You could use a Treble Booster with the Naked and get the same effect as you were describing for the Hot Mod. Then you can just turn it on and off at will.

Ironically, I have the Red legendary tones arriving today.

I’m very fortunate in that I’m borrowing a wizard modern classic two and I have a Wizard vintage classic 100 dialed in to a sound I like (almost identical between both amps) so I’m going to experiment with this over the weekend to see how much closer it really can get, (which would give me both amps flavors if you will.))

I think there’s a misconception out there about the difference between the two units. This is directly from the owner last night:

Thanks for the great info. I think I had the Mr. Scary around 2:00-3:00 when I did the recordings. Maybe too much gain? Sounded equal in the room and on the recording, though. Fascinating!
