"The new totally affordable Runt family of Friedman amplifiers are built right here in the USA by hand using printed circuit boards keeping the price tag low enough for all guitar playing mortals to afford one of these sonic beauties!"

I just want to show my appreciation for Dave Friedman, and I assume Racksystems (though I'm not clear on what exactly their relationship is... part ownership?), for the new line of Runt amps. There are three MAJOR aspects of this:

* QUALITY
* MADE IN USA
* AFFORDABLE

I came across the 20w & 50w models at Guitar Center, and even though I had very little time to play them, I was blown away. I will say, though this is in no way a criticism, that there seems to be a fair difference between them and the expensive models. Nevertheless, among the amps accessible to us mere mortals, they are outstanding. There's definitely kind of a Marshall-based overdrive, but there is something about the clean channel that's different. The cleans are REALLY good. They're not Marshall, Fender or Voxy cleans. Perhaps it's Dave's own secret recipe. To me the JJ is the ultimate Friedman, and I don't own one to reference, but I wonder if there is some JJ inspiration that went into the Runt.

Don't think I'm not saying it sounds like the JJ, but just kind of a warmer lower mid thing or something. Anyway, absolutely badass amps for the price and I am definitely going to buy the 50w model. Why the 50w? Well, perhaps I can help answer a question many people seem to have:

Is the Pink Taco still worth the money now that there's the Runt 20? Yeah, I think so because I owned a PT20 and it was amazing in every way. I think the PT has that X factor. The Runt 50 sounds a bit bigger and a more robust cleans, but the Runt 20 has a bit of a chime the 50 doesn't have. I wish I could say more, but I only had a few minutes on each channel of the two amps using a Mexican HSS strat and a Fender 2x12.

Anyway, I wish more amp makers would produce in the homeland, offer great great quality for a great great value, and that seems to be what Friedman has done here. They are always supporting people on the forums, putting out incredible amps, and really giving us our money's worth whether we buy a Runt or a Brown Eye. Fucking badass man.

I have 2 BE-100's. One is a single channel I plan to sell. I emailed Dave on Sunday to ask when he thinks it was made as it has no S/N. He responded right away and we went back and forth exchanging email. As a fellow business owner, I love the personal service.

Seems like a great guy and the amps, we already know they are great :)

Agree. Totally love my JJ.

I was lucky to be able to try a lot of great amps at volume during the last years, including Diezel (Hagen, VH4, Fokker, D-Moll), Rhodes / KSR (Colossus, Ares), Splawn Nitro, Orange Rockerverb Mk II, Mesa JP2C, Driftwood Purple Nightmare, PRS Archon and Friedman (BE 100, Smallbox, JJ).

While I also own a Hagen which is a fantastic amplifier, I have to say that for my ears and playing style, the JJ is the best amp I have had the pleasure to play so far, with the BE100 and the Colossus sharing second place.

Very curious to hear the Runt and also eager to try the Butterslax in person.

So are the Runts all built here 100%? Chassis says "Assembled in USA" which is not the same as "Built in USA". I assumed the boards were populated and wave soldered overseas, then all the parts assembled here. If they are hand soldered here in the States but at another factory then even better. The gut shot I took of my Runt 50 yesterday sure eludes to that as there are molex and spade connectors that connect everything to the board itself.

I dig the Runts. My favorite cleans of any Friedman (that I've played). The OD isn't as 3D as the flagship models... but it's pretty damn good and I could live just fine with it.

I just traded my Smallbox for an older model Dirty Shirley and love it. But I still wouldn't mind picking-up a Runt 50 to have around at some point.

Regarding the Taco... I had one for a day or two and I much prefer the Mini Shirley. It sounds like a much bigger amp than it is and just seems to have more tones in there. But they're all awesome amps and I don't think it's possible to find a "better" amp than a Friedman for crunch and gainier tones.

Btw... I've been curious as hell about the Buxom Betty for clean tones and as a pedal platform. And yet, I haven't really ever stumbled on anyone who's had or played one. Would love to try my BE-OD into one of them and see if it has that BE100 sound, but with Fender Twin/Deluxe cleans.

Pretty sure Dave has already addressed this and the boards are populated in the US.

You can't say Built or Made in USA anymore if you're selling in Cali unless all components are made in the USA... since electronics components and tubes aren't made here anymore you can't label things that way.

Nice. I remember asking him in the Racksystems sub forum and didn't see a reply, I guess he either posted somewhere else. But that's really cool.

It's pretty obvious the board was built outside of Racksystems/Friedman's factory though. Every single wire on the board is either molex or spade connectors.
But I like seeing full size pots! Means I can upgrade to CTS or Bournes in the future.

I had a chance to play a Buxom Betty head with a bunch of Wampler pedals. Sounded fantastic! They had the BE-OD hooked up to the Buxom Betty at the NAMM show and everyone was blown away with it. I didn't get a chance to try it myself. The Friedman room/booth was PACKED!

Components on the board look better than most new Marshall components!

Good to hear! Did the BB have a Fender Twin/Deluxe vibe at all? I love that breaking-glass, scooped Fender clean tone more than the mid-range Bassman tone.

Right? Yeah I'm very impressed by this one. Great build, great sound, and a price I can agree with too (I paid $1600 for mine - Sweetwater Demo unit)
