"The new totally affordable Runt family of Friedman amplifiers are built right here in the USA by hand using printed circuit boards keeping the price tag low enough for all guitar playing mortals to afford one of these sonic beauties!"
I just want to show my appreciation for Dave Friedman, and I assume Racksystems (though I'm not clear on what exactly their relationship is... part ownership?), for the new line of Runt amps. There are three MAJOR aspects of this:
* QUALITY
* MADE IN USA
* AFFORDABLE
I came across the 20w & 50w models at Guitar Center, and even though I had very little time to play them, I was blown away. I will say, though this is in no way a criticism, that there seems to be a fair difference between them and the expensive models. Nevertheless, among the amps accessible to us mere mortals, they are outstanding. There's definitely kind of a Marshall-based overdrive, but there is something about the clean channel that's different. The cleans are REALLY good. They're not Marshall, Fender or Voxy cleans. Perhaps it's Dave's own secret recipe. To me the JJ is the ultimate Friedman, and I don't own one to reference, but I wonder if there is some JJ inspiration that went into the Runt.
Don't think I'm not saying it sounds like the JJ, but just kind of a warmer lower mid thing or something. Anyway, absolutely badass amps for the price and I am definitely going to buy the 50w model. Why the 50w? Well, perhaps I can help answer a question many people seem to have:
Is the Pink Taco still worth the money now that there's the Runt 20? Yeah, I think so because I owned a PT20 and it was amazing in every way. I think the PT has that X factor. The Runt 50 sounds a bit bigger and a more robust cleans, but the Runt 20 has a bit of a chime the 50 doesn't have. I wish I could say more, but I only had a few minutes on each channel of the two amps using a Mexican HSS strat and a Fender 2x12.
Anyway, I wish more amp makers would produce in the homeland, offer great great quality for a great great value, and that seems to be what Friedman has done here. They are always supporting people on the forums, putting out incredible amps, and really giving us our money's worth whether we buy a Runt or a Brown Eye. Fucking badass man.
