Hello fellas!

Im in the market for a Friedman and have narrowed down my choice down to either a Friedman BE 100 Deluxe and the SS 100. With this being said, I am wondering if anyone with prior experiences in trying or owning the SS 100 can chime in.

Initially, what i like about the SS is its core tone, being on the dark and thick side while also having an exceptionally clean channel (based on the video and sound clips). For this function, I plan to use it for 70s rock, blues (Hendrix, Gary Moore, Judas Priest, all through to some modern metal. My only concern is that given it is based on an older Plexi, Im afraid that it may not have enough gain and juice to handle tones in the veins of Iced Earth, Opeth, etc.

With this being said, I am wondering if the gain on tap will be substantial enough for my purposes? I usually never dime out my gain and on many high gain amps Ive owned (ENGL Powerball II, SE670, Marshall JVM + JS) and may occasionally use a OD808 to boost if needed. Also, are the lower gain on tap from the SS a result of having only 4 preamp tubes as opposed to 5 preamp tubes on the other models?

Ive looked at the JJ 100 but that thing is just too pissed off sounding for this purpose and am thinking that if the SS does not have enough juice and give behind it, I might opt for the BE 100 Deluxe instead.

I thank you all in advance, and any help and insight is truly appreciated!

I haven’t played an SS100, but it should be pretty similar to a BE100. Also the new updated version seems to be more gainy and aggresive, so it should get you into Iced Earth territory without a problem.
And with a pedal I’m sure it can get into early Opeth ballpark.

GREAT GREAT amp. One thing is the bass needs to be set low (in my experience) like 9-10 o'clock, otherwise sounded incredible, a tad dark but the EQ gets you there, great gain boost GREAT cleans. Not hearing metal out of this amp tho, I feel like BE100 Deluxe or Butterslax would be a better call, I hear the SS as smooth warm Plexiglas goodness
