Good pickup for Gibson type guitars doing the VHII and beyond type rhythm stuff ?

Also, does it stay bright and clean when rolling the volume back? Really thinking about putting something a little hotter in my XG.
 
I’m up for more suggestions. I really like the WCR dark burst in my LP and might just get another for the XG.
 
It's okay but imo there's better pickups out there for that style ?

Jalen makes KILLER EVH style pickups. I have Fair Warnings in two guitars and they really do capture the EVH vibe.
 
Ed used a few different pickups. Had a PAF the pickup that came in that Japanese explorer and an early Seymour Duncan.
 
Those Jalen pickups sound great. I don’t really try and nail the brown sound just get some of the characteristics of early VH as a starting point. It’s just a great, great hard rock sound that can be a jump off point for just about anything cool.
 
I have two FriedMan NoHo 24’s with the Triple D pickups. I really like them. I know Dave describes them as “like a JB” but they don’t sound like a JB to me at all. To me they’re like a better version of the Gibson 498T/490R.

They also sound very different in the two different guitars. The ones in my alder NoHo are very hot and thick and dark. The ones in my mahogany and maple NoHo sound more balanced and clear but less hot.
 
The Duncan candy is a great Gibson style pickup. They cloned a PAF from a 60 burst. It’s clear, tight, and punchy with gain. Records well, and clean it also sounds really good. If you listen to steckels clips of this pickup it doesn’t sound the best because he has so much gain dialed in, but if you use a high gain that’s not over the top, it’s great.

The second degree black belt is also a rad Les Paul pickup. Tight, clear, punchy and aggressive.

Played a friends Les Paul that had an ox4 that was absolutely amazing. I don’t remember what model it was, but it was killer.
 
I understood the triple d to be Friedman's most modern sounding and hottest pickup. I would think the classic+ would be the recommended Friedman pickup for earlier vh stuff but it might not be hot enough for you... All of my 4 Friedmans came with the classic+ and it certainly does the hot tight paf thing to my ears, but I ultimately went hotter with a motor city afwayu in all of them.

Classic+ was cool (I had it in a Friedman vintage T) but totally different from the triple D. Far brighter and lower output but I did really like it.
 
I just found out about Pariah pickups. Those seem great. The Pasadena white seems awesome for early VH and the black gets close but maybe better for other stuff.

I might try one of those soon.

The NoHom has always interested me, Dave’s take on a LP in a strat body? Mah over maple. The neck is spec’s like a LP, right? How comfortable is the guitar?

It has a Gibson scale but very much feels like a super Strat. You can find them made of alder, mahogany, and I think ash. The neck is totally different from a Les Paul. It’s a flat D shape with a 12-16 compound radius fretboard. The guitar is extremely comfortable, I love it, but the neck is not like a LP at all.

The Friedman take on the les Paul is the metro d. Usually alder or mahogany body with maple top and mahogany set neck. The noho is a 24 fret Gibson scale bolt neck. I think it's more of a fancy dinky.
