Fryette 4x12 Fat Bottom Cabs

I owned a few. Very tight, directional and have fast attack. However I would take ANY speaker over the P50.

The only amps I really liked them with was a VHT/Fryette and a 5150II. I rocked a 5150II rig w/ Fatbottom straights a few years ago and it was sick. I liked it a lot more than some other VERY expensive rigs I had.

Probably my favorite cabs and speakers. The speakers are very tight and punchy and have this kind of edge to them. The one I had did seem to get really trebley with brighter amps but that's more that likely because I like to use more treble than the average person

I think the cab and speakers would work well with an Uberschall type amp or even my Cameron for more metal type work. As I said, I am well covered for vintage Marshall and old school. I can always change speakers, and usually do anyway just to try different stuff.

I guess everything stayed the same, except the name when Fryette bought out VHT?

Steve

There was no buy out. Steve Fryette was the original owner of VHT. He sold the name and nothing else. Steve Fryette is still building the same amps now under the name Fryette. The amps being made now under the name VHT has nothing to do with Fryette.

From what I recall, he didn't sell the name. He had an agreement (just a simple money loan, if I remember correctly) with the people who put out amps under the name VHT now. Steve Fryette in some way or another didn't meet the terms of this agreement so he had to give up the rights to the VHT name. But ya, he puts out the same stuff nonetheless. Great company too, awesome guys to deal with and have amazing products.

That is part of the interwebfableization ... I do understand it was not that simple and well not speculate on what happened.

Thanks everyone who gave me run down on the voice of the P50.

Not a fan of P50s. There's this hollow midrange notch thats impossible to dial out.

Are you open to used, older Celestions ? Plenty of discontinued models from the early 80s that do metal great, and there are no modern equivalents.

Which VHT cabs have you tried? I ask because at one time I had a standard 2x12 and a 2x12 fatbottom to compare, and while the fatbottom had that hollow mid notch, the standard didn't and sounded full and more forward in the mids. They both had p50es, so I think it was the fact that the fatbottoms are front loaded that gives them that more hollow sound. I have 2 fatbottom 2x12s now.

Yes it was a Fatbottom 4x12 I had. I swapped many Celestions in there after I ditched the P50s which sounded much better and upfront. Ultimately, while I liked the nice tight bottom of the cab, I grew tired of its harsh sound.

What are you running with your Natas?

Had the Natas proto on loan recently, don't own one yet. So far the cab that best handles the Natas's punishment is my stock Mills V30 4x12 AB. A friend brought down his Mills AB w/old Celestion G12-80s & that was also killer w/ the Natas. My Bogner 4x12s, also w/ the same Celestion 80s sound great but do not handle the Natas output quite as well as the Mills.

I have swapped many different sets of speakers between the Mills & my Bogners & other Marshall cabs. Always, the speakers seem to have much more headroom when in the Mills.

Most definitely concur with the Mills observation. Volume = Headroom = Boom & Doom

I am doing the same thing right now--swapping speakers around. Got another Mills being delivered as we speak. Well, 3 more - another 412 and 2-212's. Will give me 3-412s and 3-212's from Mills.
