We had a drummer completely blow off a gig a while back. He was a recovering coke addict and fell of the wagon earlier that evening

Some dude in the audience ran home and grabbed his kit and sat in with us for the night. It was strange as hell not knowing what to expect (he assured us he could pull it off :scared: ), but he actually did a pretty good job. He had the strangest kit that I've ever seen...the toms all looked like the bell end of a sousaphone.

North Drums?

Weren't those designed in the 50's or 60's for better projection into the crowed? Before large PA's were common?

The drummer I jam with is my best friend. We have been playing music together for over 20 years and he's like a brother to me,but yeah...... Fuck him,he's an asshole like the rest of em.

What do call a guy who hangs out with a bunch of musicians?

A drummer.
This is my situation too, not quite that long - but yeah, he's an asshole too

Yeah that was their purpose, I think they started in the early 70's?
Those North drum sound awesome. A friend of mine used to have a set, not sure if he still does but that was a killer sounding kit.

Chatting with the owner of one of the pubs we play in yesterday:

" Geez ya know I've never really noticed your drummer but last night he really got under my skin. He walked in here 30 minutes before you are due to play and opened up his suitcase full of hardware right in front of the door that meant customers had to step over it to get in. He is by far the worst musician in the band but because once upon a time he played in a pit orchestra for Jesus Christ Superstar that had some celebrity singers in the production, carries on as though he is gods gift to everyone he plays with. He played poorly last night with no sensibility and smashed the cymbals so loud that my customers were leaving while he was setting up. On top of that he was mouthy all night. I didn't want to talk to you about it because i thought he was your friend but f%$k it, I've decided I'm going to buy an electronic kit and he can play that while I control the volume...can you have a word to him?"

If it weren't for the fact that he is close to our very very good singer, he would have been gone a long time ago. As a drummer he's ok, does 4 on the floor well enough to back myself and the singer and its our show so punters dont seem to notice him. As a person he gets under EVERYONE's skin, rubs people up the wrong way constantly. Every time I've tried to call him on it, water off a ducks back....he couldn't care less..... acts as though hes doing the pubs a favour by playing there.

Last night he called me in a panic and told me I had to be at a gig urgently to set up because they wanted us to start early and when I walked in the door announced that he was going off for dinner!

I just turn up, get my money and and hang with customers during breaks which I enjoy more anyway......

And while I'm on the subject, he always plays with a Beret on his head turned around backwards

...and is always late for rehearsal by 30 mins at least......

  you just described my drummer perfectly.

My last band broke up due to the drummer never being able to practice. I finally had enough after practicing once a month at most and got my stuff.

I do find drummers to be the most critical people in the band, they are most likely to tell someone else their part is wrong. I have also played with drummers who got really annoyed when we were working out notes or tuning up.

I do play drums, but I don't really consider myself a drummer.

The only problem with my drummer is that he's a whore. He'll play with any one at any time. So for last minute gigs we are often scrounging for a drummer because he's playing with someone else.

Ah! My drummers a real whore, who knoes if hes disease free...

I guess I'm lucky. I play in two bands, and both of my drummers are great guys with excellent work ethic and are great to work with.

What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend?--------Walking.
They never have a ride of their own. There are so few of them because parents don't want to hear all that banging around. Everybody knows a cool guitar will get you laid a lot faster than a set of drums. Lets just look at a few examples of drummers. Joey Krammer has litle man's disease. He just wrote a book about how that big mean bully Steven Tyler used to pick on him. Neal in Rush is the best in the world and it would be blasphemy to speak ill of him. I met him once and he isn't too crazy about meeting the fans. Met Krammer in Aero too. He, too, wasn't all that nice. Somehow Tommy Lee gets more a... than any of the guys in that band, but he hasn't shown the best judgment. Bill Ward is great but has had tons of problems. John P is Styx died from drinking as did John B in Zep and Keith Moon I believe. Off all the ones I've seen and met, Neal is the best. Todd S. in Styx is very, very good. Tommy Aldrich is great. Joe X Dubb in Starz rocks. Andy Parker in UFO is cool. Vinnie Apice of Dio is great. Probably the same amount of bass, guitar and singers are crazy too.

Oh Christ, drummers...don't get me started. Drummers ruined 5 years of my life! I grew up jamming with this drummer all through high school who was just excellent. Then I went to music school in Minneapolis and he moved there from our hometown in Michigan to start an original metal band. We won a battle of the bands and won studio time and were doing well for ourselves.

Then his parents get a divorce and it totally changes him. He quits the band and now he plays in a funk/bluegrass/jam band called Down Lo. They're doing well and touring and playing shows with Phish and Wyclef and shit. But I could never replace him. I tried about 50 or so drummers over the following years and could never get back what we had.
We were supposed to play at 93x-fest on the main stage when he quit. Then I lost my singer who was insanely good. That's my sob story

I had a similar sob story in my "formative" years myself. Since drums are my main instrument (been playing over 30 years) I think I have some insight into the drummer's pathology. I too hung out with and played drums with one of the most talented and creative drummers I had ever heard all through high school and 3 or 4 years beyond. He was from the Neil Peart, Terry Bozzio and Bill Bruford school and I was a total Bonham, Powell, Vinnie Appice guy so we spent hours trading licks and jamming. One problem I had was that I knew I would never, in a million years be as good as this guy. The other problem was all my friends played drums and I knew of no guitar players that were worth a shit that also played the stuff I was into at the time: Slayer, Metallica, Kreator, Van Halen, Led Zep, Dio i.e. METAL  So I bit the bullit and taught myself guitar my senior year of high school. By summer I was decent enough and started jamming with my buddy who by this time earned the nickname, Drum God since his double bass work rivaled and on good night, surpased Dave Lombardo's. A couple of years later he flaked out, joined some hippie band, played/toured with them for years, squandered his true talent and went on to have a "normal" life.

My band at the time tried out several replacements and they all were miserable failures, so bad that I put the guitar down and started playing drums for the band. Since thenI have played with a couple of decent drummers but they all, including my good buddy from high school have had several fatal flaws:

1) Drummers typically don't understand song structure, arrangement and dynamics
2) Most drummers over play or are too busy (Less really is more)
3) They don't know how to play for the song
4) All of which leads to their feeling of inadequecy which in turn leads to all of their retarded, diva-like behavior

My advice to anyone looking for a drummer is to first make sure you like them as a person. If they're cool and willing to listen, they can be molded. Second, never let them try to "add" something to or restructure a song. They're ideas are usually stupid and are just a pathetic attempt for them to "show off" some "killer" fill they came up with. Also, make sure they can play "in the pocket" for the type of music you play. So many drummers I have played with have no "feel" and can barely keep time (pst...keeping time is what drummers are supposed to be doing). And finally, have some empathy. Most drummers are just frustrated singers or guitar players who can't handle sitting way back there, out of the spotlight. That's why they "practice" in between songs at rehearsal when you're trying to tune or talk to the bass player about that one note that isn't jiving during the chorus... ;)
