selling an item, asking $3000 and accepting offers.

I get an offer for $2000.

usually I ignore these, but this time I countered when his offer was about to expire, with: $4000.

the potential buyer declined. I'd guess he was surprised by it?

I get it but a 33% discount is not necessarily unreasonable these days given the gear bubble, why not just counter 2500 and be done with it?

If he'd offered $2500 or more I'd take it seriously, and likely would have accepted the offer.

I agree though in general a 33% discount would annoy me. I don't price shit that aggressively, but I see others do.

If used stuff is close to new stuff in terms of price I'll always buy new. Why wouldn't you?

Are you selling one of your Kaizens?

These days I submit low offers (not insulting offers) to see what the counter offer is. I’ve snagged some killer deals doing this.

That's not low enough for me to get offended but when I get a really stupid one here's what I like to do. It goes something like this and usually ends with a $%@()#%!! response.

"Thanks for the offer. I appreciate it but it's a little low. For that price I can let this one go though, how do you plan to pay?" (And send a picture like this).

FWIW, just sold a guitar on reverb for 10% off my asking price.
Good deal.

Four or five months ago I put in a bid about 300 bucks under asking price on a certain LP copy, which was marked kinda high at 1450. Anyways the dude countered my offer with excuses about how it was rare, awesome, hard to find, etc via private messaging and I eventually agreed to pay 1350 cuz that's what he wanted, minimum. So I entered that offe which he then allowed to expire, probably thinking he would get better action from someone else than a hundred less than asking price. Dumbass still has the LP for sale and now it's listed two hundred less than the price I had agreed to pay him, or make offer, lol. I get a chuckle out of it every time I check those listings. He will be lucky to move it in a year. Tard could've closed the deal wtihin two business days of his posting.

The guy that bought my guitar this weekend offered a reasonable bid on the low side, I countered; and we went back and forth another round.

Like I said in my OP, I'll usually ignore low-ballers with ridiculous offers; I'll consider reasonable offers.
