G-Major help needed

I have an old g-major I am trying to use and when I turn it on the screen is scrambled (unreadable) for 5-12 minutes and the system is locked up. While this is going on I cannot change channels nor does any signal get through it. Then the screen becomes readable and it starts working. This has been going on for the past 2 years. It keeps the user presets, could the battery be dead? This is a g-major 1.

Have you tried resetting the unit? I have no clue what is going on there, but a reset is always the first thing I try when something acts up.

"How to reset the G•Major?
• Power off the G•Major on the front panel.
• Press and hold the TAP key and power on
again.
• Select either “Reset Sys Param” to reset all
system parameters while keeping your
programmed user presets or “Clear all
Presets” to clear the User bank only"
 
That is why I don't go digital.

Seriously though those units are great.
 
Same with mine years ago. That chip came loose or had to be re-seated. Then the display worked again.

That sounds like Middle-Age witchcraft!
Fear of the unknown...

Things break. No matter what the technology is...
I have many digital units here, made in the early '80s... that have been working for 36 years and keep running solid.
Most of my digital unit are 20+ to 10+ years old... all work fine.
Analog breaks down too, a lot. Most of what breaks down in a digital unit are its analog components.

Anyway...
there is also a second problem...
badly made gear. Most cheap TC units have a long history of bad internal connections, displays going dead and need replacing and what not.
When you get "so cheap"... often you also get possible issues owed to it.
Analog or digital... cheap can be a problem.
 
Another vote for re-seating the PLCC chip on the display board, that fixed my G-Major when it started to display garbage, and it's been working fine ever since.

Same here.. I think I had to re-seat two chips, actually. But now it works fine
