I'm looking for something to add delay, reverb, an occasional tremolo to my current rig.
How "transparent" is the g-major when it is bypassed?
My current rig is a PT-100 which I am very happy with, and dont want to degrade my tone.
Or, would I be better off adding stompbox's in front of the amp?
Thanks

I have a gmajor and have been very happy. For me I don't bypass the unit at because the eq, compressors and gates really enhance my tone. The unit is the most transparent effects device that I personally have ever used. And the amp channel switching is a big plus.

You can score a gmajor cheep now that the gmajor 2 is out. I would go for the 2 but that is just me. I bought my gmajor and 3 months later out comes the 2. Then to boot it has what I complained about not having in the first unit. Now I want to upgrade. :gethim:

I like it and found it easier to use the PC patch editors rather than to dial it in from the unit itself.

I'm also interested in a G Major mostly for reverb/delay, and some chorus occasionally. How do these things do for high-gain? What options are out there for very small MIDI controllers (maybe 3-5 buttons) that I could fit on a pedalboard (probably Pedal Train JR) with some of my other pedals?

G-Major is a great unit. I used one with my 5150 for a couple of years before I got my G-System. I used a Rolls MIDI buddy and then a Ground Control Pro for my MIDI controller. Neither are very small but work great.

Thats what I'm looking to do, some delay, some reverb, maybe a special patch for something exotic. and a SMALL controller, (basically take the place of my amp switcher).
Egnater had a small controller that they used for the Mod50 that would be about the right size.

I play through an engl e530 preamp, mesa 2:90 power amp, and play progressive metal it holds up well to high gain. Any midi controller would work. I use a old ground control (pre voodoo labs) I have had no issues with the gmajor. It is very clean sounding. the gmajor 2 has intelligent pitch shitching, wah controls, better verbs, univibe, and tri-chorus. You could possibly drop a couple pedals with the new unit.

I use mine for delay on soloing
and reverb/chorus on clean settings
the delays/chorus/reverb are nice even with factory settings
but you must tweak the flanger/phaser settings to get the perfect sound.
I prefer bypassing it on crunch channel rhythm with my GCX switcher but if you add a good EQ after it, you can use it all the time.

Great unit. Very flexible. My only complaint are the knobs that can be a bit tricky sometimes.

Buy one used on ebay they're cheap (about 250$)

Hey tcrash.

The tc g-major is a great unit for the price. Its fx are all the same as the tc g-force. Virtually the only thing different between the two are the pitch shifting in the g-force harmonizer has a bit of intelligence built into it. The reverb, delays, choruses, pitch (detune, whammy, octave…) etc are all top notch.

I went through a knee-jerk period for a month or two and made the mistake of dishing out 2K for the Axe-fx. What a BIG error. My Herbert is the real deal and there is nothing in the Axe-fx that can simulate Herbert and I don’t like amp sims anyway. I returned it promptly! To each their own.

My midi on my Herbert controls all the functionality of my tc g-major and it works flawlessly. Channel switching no matter how many fx you are running simultaneously is instant, no delay between patches whatsoever. I run my g-major continuously and it is completely and totally transparent to the human ears.

If you can push a few extra $$$ go for the tc g-major2. There’s not much difference between the tc g-major and the tc g-major2 but for a few extra bells and whistles that may not even be worth it to you.

Try to get a new one though, used fx I never go for. Find a GC and take advantage of their 30 return policies and let you ears do the screening.

Good luck.

I use mostly analog stuff .... but have a G Major to round out the sounds. (I do not see myself having 10 or more analog delays at a show)

I use a switcher so it is out of the chain when not used. It is very good for the money.
