G-System & external preamp routing question

Hi guys,

I am looking at the TC Electronics G-System to simplify my effects and routing situation.

It seems to be able to do what I need but there's one thing I am not sure about - can I use the Preamp Insert to basically switch between that and my amp's actual preamp (in my case a 6505, which has an awesome distorted sound but the "clean" is "meh"…)?

I guess would hook it up like this:
Guitar -> G System -> Amp Input -> Amp Effects Send to G System -> Effects Return

Can I then make these three presets work with just internal routing changes in the G System:

Preset 1 (Clean with external preamp, BYPASSING the 6505's preamp and going into Loop Return):
Guitar -> G-System with external Preamp Pedal like a Tech 21 Blonde -> 6505 EFFECTS LOOP

Preset 2 (Heavy Rhythm):
Guitar -> G-System with Tubescreamer in Loop 1 -> 6505 Input (nothing going on in the amp's effects loop)

Preset 3 (Lead):
Guitar -> G-System with Tubescreamer in Loop 1 -> 6505 Input -> Effects send back to G System for Delay & Reverb -> back to 6505 Effects Return

Thanks for your help!

The preamp insert is typically dedicated to the heads preamp.

However, if you're willing to give up loop 4 for a second preamp you could switch preamps the way you want to.

Ahh, yeah that was confusing to me, I didn't get that the preamp insert was for the actual amp preamp. Thanks for clearing that up!

And great idea to use one of the 4 loops for another preamp. So just to be clear, if I'd do that (I just need 1 of the loops for a Tube Screamer anyway) I would be good to go?

THANKS

Yes. Although I make no promises as to whether using a pedal as a preamp will sound good jacked straight into the power amp as I've never tried it myself.

OK awesome - thanks for your help!!

And you have to use Loop 4 for this to work I believe am I correct on this? I know when some users are running 2 amp setups and switching between amps they have one in the insert loop and the other on Loop 4. Never hear about it on say Loops 1-3 always on Loop 4.

In theory you could do it on any loop... but using loop 4 ensures that any pedals placed in loops 1, 2 or 3 are before your amp.
