I studied it quite extensively after purchasing my Herbert and, yes, you can control everything on the Herbert with it via MIDI, including inserting effects before and after the Herbert preamp, which sounds wonderful, in theory. But, the caveat is that the buffers in the pre-insert loop suck tone (according to field reports) and the software is still extremely buggy, despite a glowing review in Guitar Player. If you want many of those same capabilities at 1/4 the price, you might want to check into Boss GT-8, which has MIDI out (to control Herbert functions in tandem with its own) and an FX loop which can be inserted anywhere in its signal chain. So, you could run GT-8 effects before its FX send, run that into the Herbert input, run the Herbert FX send into the GT-8 FX return and then run the GT-8 output into the Herbert FX return. That way, you could put time-domain FX after the Herbert preamp distortion and things like wah, OD pedals, compression, etc, before the Herbert preamp and have them all switchable based on which Herbert channel being used.

Sgt. Thump does this with his GT-8and Einstein (minus the MIDI) and says it sounds incredible!

^Too bad about the G-System sucking tone. I was thinking about buying one of these to use with the Herbert (when I get it) as well. I already have a Boss GT-8 that I use with my Ubershall and works pretty good.

hey mhenson42, im gonna use my xt live in the effects loop of my herbert, also using it to switch channels on the herbie midi style. is this gonna work out like the gt 8? where should the output level knob on the back(tiny knob) be set? im just using the time based effects, no modeling or boost functions. is this gonna do the poor mans g system like i want?

^Can't help you with the XT live since I don't have one. I will say that the Boss GT-8 has a better connection capability because you can place your amp in its loop via the use of the 4-cable connection method. The GT-8 will change the channels of the Uber via normal switching through a 1/4 inch jack. The Uber is not MIDI so I haven't used that yet.

Right now I just have the GT-8 running through the FX loop of the Uber so I can by-pass it using the FX control on the Uber footswitch. As far as the output level knob, I just turned it to a point where there was no volume difference between when the FX loop was disengaged (GT-8 not active) and engaged (GT-8 active).

I don't have my Herbert yet (should get it in mid-august) so I'm not using the MIDI control capabilities of the GT-8. I will definately try it though - if I'm able to figure it out. :? If it doesn't work-out then I just buy the Diezel Columbus or an Engl Z-12 and a G-Major.

Matt,

I think it's just a matter of connecting the GT-8 MIDI OUT to the Herbert MIDI IN. I believe both units default to channel #1. If not, you just need to reprogram one of the other. It's easy to do on the Herbert. Don't know about the GT-8 though.

Dave

^Yeah. I'm not worried about the Herbert being difficult. On the video I saw it looks pretty simple. The GT-8 is what can be a pain in the ass at times. I should be simple - but you never know.

yeah thanx for your help, im not interested in a complicated looping setup like the gt-8 cuz i just use a carl martin compressor in front of the amp. all im using the xt for is time based effects. i think it should do fine, until i get a g system thanx for your help.

People have been stating that the G-System is a tone sucking machine for years, eh? I didn't even know it was out back then. I think it is time for a refresh, TC!

hey for what its worth.... I had the g system with my herbert.... I did extensive reserach n still tried it..lol TWICE! Twice it was a fail! I even did that laird setup from his book on it...No go..I wanted this to work and tried but I messed with the tone of my amp, $4500 dollar amp,, sorry dont fuck with the tone!

Now for the good news...I am running a Digitech Gsp1101 with the control 2 pedal board...Fucking Flawless! No tone suck, no lag in preset changes, assoon as you click the herbert changes... all the fx are excellent.. i dont use the cab sim or preamps, dont need with herbert.I use 4 cable method just like gsystem.. I put certain fx in front n others in switchable loop.its amazing!

any questions pm me...good luck...ps its cheaper than gsystem too...

Thanks! I will PM you question if any come up.

Digitech is that good, eh?

Yeah it's that good. Just do a lil research. I was just setting patches on it today. Let me know if I can help. There was a thread just a page or two back about gsp1101

I am just about to ditch my G System and go back to pedals. I have been using it with a PT100 so no midi and dead easy channel switching which is about the only positive I could find. I have a wireless with a buffer in front of it but to me it doesnt seem to make much difference. I could never bond with a lot of the effects in it and would rather be able to reach down and twist a knob in the middle of a song than navigate the menus. I already have a VH Phaser, Lunar Module and Ecstacy OD in the loops plus a wah out front so its not to big a stretch to throw a comp, chorus and delay onto a board with those and make life a LOT simpler.

I really wanted to like it and the idea of having my Macbook running the editor via USB on a gig was enticing but in real life it was far from perfect and the G System always needed re-syncing for some reason.

So I'm back to tap dancing but I dont mind too much.....

Look into gsp1101. The fx are just like pedals. No deep editing. Say if a phaser has 2 knobs that's what it has in gsp. Very simple. N the matching control 2 is excellent. It switches midi on my Herbert. I too wanted gsystem to work. It's an awesome looking machine great idea. But twice I tried. I also have gmaj2 n still the gsp beats it. My opinion.

Another option if u want real pedals is the Rjm switcher n a mastermind midi pedal. Put the pedals in a rack n just have your misi pedal out front. That's my other setup. All I have is a remote wah ( from rack wah) n midi pedal out front. 2 cords. In rack I have power/tuner/rack wah/switcher/wireless/and pedals along with two heads.
