Got a used six string guitar, and I want to put 10-56 strings on it. That require some filing at the nut. Has anyone ever returned a guitar to GC after doing this or something similar? No other mods would be done to it.

Thanks!

I honestly think they wouldn't even know. If you told them that might make it un-returnable. But, I've bought items there that have been bought previously and returned, and altered before return. They seemed to accept them. Different speakers in cabs than the pictures etc.

They won’t notice unless you absolutely botch the job. I wouldn’t say anything about it if you intend on returning it.

Why would you file the nut and then return it?

And, are you the type that would start a thread saying "I just bought a used guitar from GC and someone filed the nut, I'm returning it!"?

Clearly, yes. It’s a used guitar. For all I know it’s already been filed for the strings it has on it.

On a used guitar, filing the nut to fit a slightly thicker string is a nonissue. Your other option is to take it back and tell them it wouldn’t work with the string gauge you want to use. It won’t stop the next person from using thinner strings so I don’t see what the problem is.

I don't see it as an issue. The change to the slot is minimal and wouldn't effect someone going back to a more standard gauge. At least not in my experience with my guitars. I wouldn't go to town on it though if i think I might return it. Probably take the d string from the previous set and use it to work the E and A slots a little just to make sure those heavy bottoms sit OK. Just enough to string it up and make sure I like the guitar. Have you tried putting a 56 in the slot. It might fit already.

I would only do 10-52, which on some other guitars didn’t require any filing. I wouldn’t do the 56 as that would most definitely require filing.

I’ll just see how I like 10-46 first. The strings on there now are gross!

One word - integrity.

Think about it.

Some people have none. Some are dishonest too, without batting an eye.

Stuff like this pisses me off. Changing speakers and returning a cab is acceptable?

Changing speakers and returning a cab is not ok. Slightly widening the nut slots to see if you like how it plays with your gauge strings and returning it if it doesn’t suit you isn’t a problem unless you’ve botched the filing so bad that a thinner string will now buzz in the slot.

You understand that he’s saying that he has purchased items that someone else had previously bought, altered, and then returned and the GC folk didn’t seem to have a problem accepting it back.

Hold on, man: I asked a question. It’s an already used guitar, I didn’t know. I not gonna touch it and restring with the strings it has on.

Peace.

Hey numbnuts, I'm talking about cabs that have had pics of the speakers inside, only to receive the cab with different speakers in it. I'm not the one who swapped them.

If you are not referring to me my apologies.

Yeah, I can read... He also said this:
"I wouldn’t say anything about it if you intend on returning it".

And this: "If you told them that might make it un-returnable."

If we're so honest, why keep secrets?

Because filing a nut isn’t the same as swapping speakers. I assume he intended to keep it if he liked it but on the off chance that he didn’t jell with it what he did was not a fundamental change to the device. It’s not like he swapped out a bone nut for a piece of hard playdoh and then installed the bone nut in one of his keeper guitars.
