I went to see Souls of We last night at a local dive bar near my house. I thought I’d give a review for you guys.

First of all, they played at a total dive bar. I didn’t even know they were playing until a buddy of mine called my at 8PM and told me. There was zero publicity for this show. If I were George, I’d fire whoever is doing the booking. There are at least three venues that I can think of off the top of my head that would have been far better. Hell, if there were 100 people there I’d be surprised.

I was standing right in front of George for the whole show. So that was really cool. He actually set his own stuff up… which tripped me out a little. I’m not used to seeing a national act do that. He was playing an ESP Tele. I believe that it is the one that he’s playing in the YouTube video where he's tracking the overdubs for “Key of Noise” in the desert. He used a Diezel Herbert, and had a Marsha sitting on top of the Diezel. He also had a smorgasbord of pedals in front of him. I recognized a script logo MXR phase 90, TS808, and his sig boost pedal. There were some pedals that I didn’t recognize, but there were a leslie pedal, rotoshpere type pedal and a delay. His second guitarist was playing a modded plexi… and actually had better tone than George.

A few observations before I talk about the playing. During the first song, George’s strap came off the butt end of his guitar… wtf, George? Haven’t you ever heard of strap locks?!!? The second incident came two songs later, when he stepped on his guitar chord and it came out of the guitar… 1) Why aren’t you using a wireless to avoid this situation altogether? 2) Haven’t you ever heard of looping your chord between the guitar and your strap?

Onward to the performance… George seemed to be fighting his equipment a lot last night. Where you fight the sound and things just seem harder to play. With that said, he was a monster! While I was hoping to see him with the tiger guitar, he rock the shit out of that tele. I mean is sounded great! His playing was better that the last few vids I’ve seen of him. Just a really solid performance that was humbling to watch from that close. The band was very tight and the show was very enjoyable. They said that the new SoW album should be hitting the shelves this summer. I am very glad to see that George will be sticking with this project for a while. The band came out after the show and hung out with the crowd and signed shit and shot the shit. I thought that was really cool. George seems like a very down to earth guy. I enjoyed talking with him.

The things that I really came away with last night: 1) I have a cleaner stage/ gigging setup that George Lynch. 2) It’s nice to see that even guitar gods like Lynch have nights where they have to fight the guitar. Because God knows there have been nights where I have had to fight the hell out of mine. 3) I need to do some serious practicing… lol! He was very inspiring to watch. It made me what to be a better player. And I think that’s great!

As you can see, I was right in front of him!

Herbert??

Have not seen that before.

Here is a pretty cool sound check vid of SOW in Toyko, George sounds pretty good.

I saw SoW at a dive bar in Cleveland a few months ago. George was running plexi's of some type and had the cabs facing backward. He used the tiger, Skulls and Snakes, and a ESP Lynch Paul. His tone was pretty incredible.

He played better than I have seen him play in a long time too. He was all over the fretboard and really seemed to be enjoying himself. His daughter (I think) was his roadie for the show.

Nice to see a fellow Houstonian on here. I wanted to go to the show since it's not that far from where I live either but I had to take our cat to the Emergency Vet so I missed it. We actually got to open up for him the last time he played at that clubs previous location when it was a little farther down the road and went by a different name. George was a nice guy and signed my LTD guitar. Sounds like it was a good show.

Great review! Some on the forum said he was in GC and bought a Herbert a couple months back. I'd love to see them come through Portland!

Have not seen that before.

He had a Lime green Herbert custom made.
There was some pics of it here about a month or so ago.
I cant find the link. It looks pretty sweet though.

I'm not sure how longs he's been playing the Hebert. I was really hoping that he was gonna play the Marsha, as I have yet to hear one in person.

The second guitarist had what looked to me a modded four hole plexi. It was purple and I didn't see any dirt boxes on his pedalboard, so I have to assume that it was modded... as I've never heard a stock plexi get that much gain. He also have a perplexi (spelling?) head on top of the other one, but it was not plugged in.

sounds like Jim Wigle playing rythm (inventer of the original purplexi I think) - super nice guy - used to work for Groove Tubes.

SFW, what did you think of Marzi?

That dude is SICK. Hope you got to see him rip.

And as far as George fighting that stage, the last (and only time) we played there it took me an hour to start to get any sort of comfort up there. Maybe the place is cursed?

Or maybe we just need to practice more...

Yes, Marzi was sick! I need to see if they have anything on iTunes. I really dug their stuff.

I've played that place when it was still FBI- right after they moved there. I didn't have an issue with the stage, but who knows...

I've been lucky enough to let Marzi jam on my rig a couple of different times (didnt try to play with him- He would have Jack Butlered me anyway).

I think he's one of those special guys who might never have given a big break, but DEFINITELY one who should have.

Aint that the bitch.

Marzi, I'll always tout your prowess. I know far too well how talented you are.

My best.

Todd

i saw them a few months ago...50 people tops.....george was running the soldano SLO all night w/ the reversed cab...the band had sound issues and it sounded like shit all night......not their fault
the only thing that bummed me out was that they played Mr scary the instrumental and it was fuckin boring as hell, riffs and notes flying meanlesly
it was good to see him though

First saw George in 1982', been a huge fan for a long time, but i must say the last few years have been disappointing.
