i know you guys might not care about my amp drama, but I sold my powerball last night for $1100 and a few pedals thrown in by the buyer. As i said, I'm looking for something much more simpler in the combo format. Getting away from the ultra high gain. So, based on some of the input you guys have given me, my head's about to explode.

Given my budget of approximately $1200, i've started considering the Mesa Electrodyne, but not sure I need the "loudness" of some of the Mesa stuff, Egnater Renegade (which looks a little too complicated), and the Blackstar HT-20 or HT-40.

Although I haven't tried any of these amps, I'm kinda headed down the path of the relatively cheap Blackstar, with extra money to spend on some cool fuzz pedals....In a strange twist of fate, I received my Ibanez Airplane Flanger yesterday, but NOW don't have an amp!

I know the renegade in and out since I helped voice and design the amp with Bruce! Let me know if I can help!

Marshall, Marshall, Marshall......... JVM, JCM800, DSL... :dunno:

My first choice was the Blackstar HT-40 before I got the Alchemist. It seems they're always sold out or the shippings are delayed but I didn't want to wait for 'em.

oh yeah, I forgot to say I was considering the JVM combo. And Jeff, I figured you'd chime in on the Egnater stuff. I just can't decide. I'm really inspired by the Paul Gilbert approach of medium gain with pedals. Here in Lexington, our music store choices are not very diverse, but I'll get a chance to try a few things out this weekend.

It really pains me to say it, and I know the Powerball gets ridiculed...I really liked it, but couldn't deal with 4 channels, and all the knobs. Instead of plugging in and just having fun, it felt like I was constantly turning knobs and pushing buttons. The Electrodyne encourages me because it's basically single channel, but $1695?? and 40/90W. Even 40W on a Mesa is probably overkill for me.

maybe a second hand SLO-100?
they're very responsive to eq adjustments and quite easy to dial in from my experience, not sure how pricey they are over the pond.
obviously 5150's would also fit the bill, you could get one modded by jerry and have cash left over for $1200

..not that anyone may care, but....

Ended up getting a Blackstar HT-20 today and couldn't be happier. Awesomely simple...two channels and is a ton of fun to play, especially with pedals. Goes from clean, to the "fly by night" sound, to overdriven and beyond. Takes pedals really well, and the whole deal was on $550. So, after selling the P-ball, I got extra money for a few cool pedals. Picked up the Airplane flanger from Ibanez and loving it.

I think I especially like the price. Could have gone for a higher end amp, but i'm just a living room player nowadays.
