Just got a killer deal on 1982 Gibson Les Paul Standard in limited edition candy apple red. Only thing is the seller was a smoker and it has that smell. Any suggestions for getting rid of it?

nitro finish?

i dont know of any tricks for the old nitrocellulose finishes other than to air it out - keep it out of the case.

Smoke cigars around it...covers up that cigarette smell well :D

Wipe the guitar down with rubbing alcohol on a clean cotton cloth.
Use a good fretboard cleaner like Roche-Thomas premium fingerboard oil.

Leave it out of the case. It's usually the case that stinks annd transfers it to the guitar. You might try activated charcoal in the case. If that doesn't work, leave the guitar out and buy a new case.

Rubbing alchohol will harm a nitro finish where as varsol won't. Hard to believe but it's true.

+1 dont use rubbing alcohol

get one of those car-style mirror hangers for the case as well to try. i do remember a buddy of mine doing that before.

If the smell is in the guitar case.. leave the guitar out of the case and throw scented fabric softner in the case and leave it closed for a few days...

Citrus peels, vinegar, and charcoal can also absorb odor..

Right there! Fabric softener in the case. Toss a bunch of them in it.

I used ammonia with a damp cotton cloth, but you have to take the pups out, machines, plates etc and really get in there. Then a little sunlight, not joking!
Should be gone after that. Don't drown it though.

Agreed. The sun definitely helps. Leave the case open outside and febreeze it.
