I am looking to get some new pickups for my '73 Gibson LP custom. The guitar is very thick and mean sounding.
Here is what I have had in the LP custom:
TTop Neck, Rio Grande BBQ bridge. This combo was okay, lacked clarity and sweetness on the neck. The BBQ was too thick and meaty, as this guitar is already thick and meaty. The BBQ sounded like it had a ton of output in this guitar

Seymour Duncan Jazz neck, Suhr Aldrich bridge. This combo was what I used for the last few years. The Jazz was pretty sweet sounding the neck and split okay. The Aldrich was very clear, but a little hot. Often ran it split, which it did well. I have another LP with an Aldrich set, so I am looking to go a different direction.

Currently have: Gibson BBpro neck, and Gibson BBpro Bridge with new unoriented A5 magnet. This combo I just put it as I had the pickups. the neck is pretty nice, a little harsh on the treble, but a little sweeter than the Jazz. The bridge is pretty nice, a little thin and bright for my tastes, and not as sweet as I would like. This is more the direction I want to go.

I have a heard the '57 Classic and Classic plus in 3 guitars and always like them. My buddy has a Gibson LP studio lite and Ephiphone Sheraton with these pickups and particularly the Sheraton just sounds great, I love the warm buttery sound and like the way the they push the amp too. I figured though I should look into some other options as I am not finding many '57 Classic and '57 Classic plus pickups in black on the used market. I can get the set new for about $200 and that is about my budget, spending more will require waiting longer.

I would prefer 4 conductor as my LP custom has push pull pots in it to split or run the coils in parallel. I don't see the '57 classics much in 4 conductor, and new its a big upcharge.

Here are a few I am thinking of, looking for comparisons of these with the '57 classics and also with regards to what I want and more to add to the list to check out.
BKP - Mule, found they are about $300 a set
Motor City pickups - Blackbelt
Dimarzion - PAF 36th anniversary

Mules and RiffRaffs, period.

I have both already in a couple guitars, and have just ordered another set of Mules for my '57 goldtop.

Ya, they're that good

I've got some Wolfetone Marshallheads in an 80's V that are a phenomenal PAF style pickup. Cut and rock but not thin in the top end. I have Dimarzio 36 Anni's in a Burny LP copy that sound good. Slight more push than the Marshallheads with an even more aggressive character. The Marshallheads can be sweet or mean depending on the amp and settings but the Dimarzio's have a raw sound to them that says I rock 24/7. The 36 Anni's made a JVM410H actually sound great to me which is something. I have a 57 classic in an 80's 335 that sounds pretty raw too but I'm taking that out to put the original Shaw back in. Having a 57 classic around is always a good thing. It's my favorite Gibson pickup. Not crazy about the plus version though. It's get's a little cocked in the mids for me with no more real discernible output than a regular one.

The Marshallheads are probably my go to for playing anything.

+1

exactly what I have in my '73 gibson LP custom after trying a dozen pickups in it

the black dog also sounded great in the bridge, and sounds fatter and warmer than the riff raff
I have it in a maple neck '78 greco LP standard now, and it matches this guitar much better, though

Just get a used set of 57 Classics and have someone mod them for 4 conductor.

I replaced the 57's in my Trad +LP with a ToneZone in the bridge ans a DiMarzio 36th Anniversary in the neck.

I just checked and no sir, I did not... :dunno:

Try the Duncan Alnico Pros. They sound great in my '76 LPC.

DiMarzio 36th Anniverarys. They kill, especially the bridge...for the neck I love the PAf Joe.

MCP black belt AII mags

This  or the MCP Detroiter.

I have the Fralin AIVs in my Heritage 150CM and I really like them. Very warm and smooth with clarity.

Rio Grande BBQ/Texas

I had those in an LP studio. I didn't like the Texas much at all, the BBQ was nice, but too thick crunchy for what I am looking for in this guitar.

I am actually really enjoying the BBpros, which surprised me....
