Thinking lately about doing an overhaul on my les paul and making all the little changes that are going to make it better to play for me. I've never thought about swapping the tuners until now and wanted to ask the guys that know if it's going to be beneficial for me. I have stock gold gibson tuners with the flip out winders from the 80's, I don't know what the best switch would be as well as if I can get a set that will swap out without any extra holes being drilled etc

I'm not a Gibson guy, but what type of tuners do you have on the guitar now? I know you said the stock gold, but would that be Klusons or perhaps Grovers?

Kluson makes the TPKB3L locking tuners which do not appear to require any extra holes; however, I have no experience with them, nor do I know if they work as well as other locking tuners.

If you have Grovers, you may consider locking rotomatics. They do require a mounting screw, but you may be able to reuse the screw holes currently in place if you do indeed have Grovers.

Upon a little research they are indeed the grover style, marked gibson, but exactly the same except for the mounting screw placement, on my machine heads the mounting screw is on the inside bottom corner of each tuner instead of right below it, I'll look into these rotomatics though thanks

My standard had Klusons, and once I got my custom, I liked the Grovers so much more I added them to the standard.

What do you not like about the tuners you have?

Well I was more wondering if it would be beneficial to get a new set, I don't know a whole lot about the innerds of these things but when my guitar is stringless each one has a different tension and thats always thrown me a bit

Do they have the little screw on top of the buttons? You can use a small screw driver to tighten those up and make the buttons feel like they have a bit more tension (I had to do this on my G&L's Schallers). If it is a problem with the gears slipping or something, then a replacement may be a better option.

No screw to be found, I'm starting to think a replacement might be in order

Take it to a decent tech before you start messin' with it... Seriously.

I put Grover locking tuners on my Gibson Les Paul Custom. Grover and many other companies make direct replacements. The Grovers are like 18:1 ratios or something and look pretty much the same, they just work a lot better. I find my LPC is very stable.

These tuners with the flip out string winders are pretty cool, They only came on some gibson lp customs in around 82 to 84 i believe. I have them on my 84 custom and I like em, I wouldnt install any aftermarket tuners that would require adding extra holes or widening the post hole.
