Which years had the maple necks (not fretboards)?

Depends on model...in general...
Standards...something like '76 to '84...

The maple doesn't sound/feel the same as the mahog...but it's not a better/worse thing...just different. I like it for metal.

I love the maple neck on my custom. I'm not much of a fan of the mahogany-necked Customs. The Maple adds a slightly better attack and snap for heavier styles as you said.

Most def. I love my mahog necked '92 Classic (mainly because its neck is so thin)...but my next LP will be a maple necked Custom...hopefully a Silverburst.

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm looking for considering I mainly play metal. I'm looking for a maple neck Custom with an ebony fretboard. Around '76 was when the pancake bodies were starting to be phased out, right?

My 73 Custom

The blemishes around the knobs are from switches I installed in 1976 because I was a DiMeola freak and he used DiMarzio Dual Sounds with little coil tap switches. The hole in the finish is from my pinky resting there the last 35 years, not from the pick. It's not a great guitar. I've never been able to get the intonation right. The pancake body does not ring as true as my PRS guitars which are solid slabs.

'76-'77...by '78 you can be pretty much guaranteed it will be a one piece body.

Even with the paint on the body...you should be able to see the pancake strip around the edge. But I'd look for later examples...pre'84...I think the quality got better as time went on. ...and they should be cheaper too.
