Depends on model...in general...
Standards...something like '76 to '84...
The maple doesn't sound/feel the same as the mahog...but it's not a better/worse thing...just different. I like it for metal.

I love the maple neck on my custom. I'm not much of a fan of the mahogany-necked Customs. The Maple adds a slightly better attack and snap for heavier styles as you said.
