Gibson president wants to move away from ... GUITARS

With shortages in wood, quality control issues, and a lucrative market in rebranding products with a recognizable logo I would have a hard time believing that they wouldn't move out of the instrument market eventually.

Imagine you spend, what, $7-10K on a Les Paul, and you get this shit

If this is the crap they're peddling for that kind of dough, they should get away from manufacturing guitars.

What guitar is this? What's up with the black lines?

Thats so weird, is that like, they draw a line on the guitar where the wear is supposed to be, before it's painted then go in and age it, and you are left with some black mark like that?

YA I don't get that either. I could see if some was left on the red stained area.

This is Gibson's quality control dept at work. They were SO lazy that they didn't even use a 10 cent eraser to erase the pencil marks. However, they didn't forget to charge you a premium price for the relicing.

they look doomed as so the music industry unless there is a rapid change.
No more superbands, no more supertours...

Anyway, i have a 2013 traditional, stop making the guitars so i can sell mine in the future for a profit :)

That is pretty bad. However, I've gotten two Les Pauls in the last year and they have been built very well with no issues. They sound great and they are super resonant compared to some of my previous guitars.

OP, the prez probably meant he wants to move resources from creating innovations in their guitars to electronics, not stop making guitars. They just won't make whacky colors and designs anymore.

I will give you a example,in 2013 I was looking at going back into a Les Paul. I went and played as many Les Pauls as possible from the high priced custom shop to the Les Paul Customs and standards. After playing so many I kept going back to this Les Paul Studio which was gloss wine red with a crème color pickguard with crème color pickup rings with gold color volume/tone knobs 498t bridge pickup and 490 neck pickup, this guitar just had this holy grail feel and sound that just smoked the other Les Pauls(custom shop, customs, standards)that I tried,I bought that guitar and a year end price for $900 with a hardshell case at Wildwood Guitars in Colorado( I was vacationing in Colorado at that time).Ive had numerous friends use that guitar for recording and playing live due to its amazing sound and feel. Its a guitar that I probably wont part with.It just goes to show that you don't have to spend a fortune on a Les Paul such as a custom shop model which I believe is all marketing.

I'm not on that bandwagon. I recently spent 2 days playing all manner of Lesters - around 30 - and I liked most very one. The CS output is ridiculously good. I took a shine to both the highest priced artist signed, Murphy aged model and to the lowest priced store special. I even enjoyed the feel of the richlite board on the Custom, no matter how much I tried to dislike it. All very annoying as I'm a picky buyer and it left me wanting one of every model, which wasn't the plan.

I can't make a judgement on the pics above without a back story. For all I know, the owner's kid likes to trace outlines.

I guess that now that they are the parent company for Philips and Onkyo, I can see how they might increase their focus on electronics.

Makes no difference to me. Their ridiculous "innovations" and exponential price increases every other year have sealed the deal for me as having bought my last new Gibson several years ago.

Who really cares about what Gibson is doing these days?? there are better choices out there these days.

+1

A Carvin CS6 will blow away any Gibson for 1/3 the price.

Screw Gibson. Their quality has been on the downfall for quite a few years, yet the price increases every year, it seems.
True, But the 2013 and maybe the 2015 Historics will go down as great years.
Imo, there are turds, and jems from just about any year, that's part of the problem. I'd love to see Henry J sell Gibson to someone who gives a crap about their QC.

Henry is a Nut Job.
He alienates the previous brand loyalists and throws tried and true tradition in the crapper.
Just so he can feel bigger than the brand.
I really wonder how he keeps his position. Is Gibson really making that much these days.
Because my local GC,s cant sell the new Gibsons they have.
