Cream, I'll never forget hearing the '68 song "White Room" at the age of 10 - blew my mind.
On a side note, I never really found Clapton impressive after that without the crew. His solo attempt was a serious departure from his roots. Lackluster at best in comparison. Then Eric decided (similar to Halford) to do a PR image reset and morphed into a preppy (former heroin addict) aristocrat with tortoise shell frames. Not too bad, but no Crossroads.
IMO, this is what put Eric on the map. It's all Eric, his trusty ES-335 (or occasional SG back then), his tenor pipes and some late '60s classic hard core blues rock.
