I'm looking into Hi gain monsters now. Currently I'm looking into the Framus Cobra. Also in the scope is the ENGL SE/Invader Or a Deizel Herbert.

Can anyone give me some info as far as build quality, pricing, and if there are any more "desirable" versions of these amps. You know updates that make them more desirable.

Also how far off in terms of quality are the ENGL and Framus amps to the Deizels?

I've been looking into boutique HI QUALITY amps like Metropoulis and the likes of them for a while now so that's were my standards have gotten me to. I know that the metro is nothing like the Framus but in terms of quality that's what I like.

Here is what I'd LIKE in an amp. I know not all this can be done but it's what I'd like. If anyone knows an amp that can do this let me know.

1. Cleans up with the volume knob
2. HAs TONS of touch sensativity. I want the crowd to FEEL it when I accidentally scrape my knuckle over the B and E strings.
3. Big but very tight bottom end. My HW 1959 has huge bottom end and is just thick. Almost like plugging into a bass amp bottom end.
4. Is very loud. Gets louder even past 12 oclock. Doesn't top out and then as you turn up the volume stays the same volume...
5. Has a nice Orgainc hi end. Diming the treble and presence should be pleasant not harsh.
6. Has Tons of Gain. A "hi gain" amp. Not that compressed scooped mids type of gain but uncompressed kick you in the chest type of gutteral sounds.
7. Is quality made. Good parts. : )
Thanks for all the help guys!
Jim.

Diezel Herbert seems to be what you would want. It has the "magic" dynamics, but only if you are using passives, the actives make the Herbert loose some of it's mojo.

The only amp I speak about from personal experience is the Herbert. I've owned mine for a couple of years and probably have used it on 10 records, the Herbert is a beast. The thing I love about it most is it's got crunch not fuzz, I hate the sound of fuzzy amps and a lot of high gain amps suck IMO and are only useful to annoy people at Guitar Center. The Herberts a man's amp! Very versitile, I do a lot of pop rock for American Idol and Nickelodeon as well as hard rock and metal records, my Herbert has made it on to a variety of styles of records; from drop tuned Pauls in Ch 3 to Tele's sparckling and crunching in Ch 2. The clean cannel gets some use but we own an array of Fenders and Voxs that cover a lot of that and are truely built for those tones.

Herbert's are not cheap, I think they go around 4K but you can get them for around 3K on eBay. Peter did I mod on the one I own and it is just intense sounding and inspires me to play. But at the end of the day you have to find what amp inspires you. I went to see 'Another Animal' in concert a couple of years ago and stood infront of the guitarists rig of Herberts and was blown away at what I heard. That's what you need to do, is be blown away and get the amp that blowns you away, which ever one it is.

Thanks for the knowledge. :) I think MAYBE I can talk me guitarist into getting one. Can anyone give some GOOD clips of the Herbert?

Now as far as Quality made heads, what heads meet the requirements lsted above? I want a good higainer with lot's of tight mids, but not annoying over time tight.

As another suggestion a Wizard Metal probably fits the bill for what you are looking for

What kind of music do you play?

I play heavy Pop rock. You know, thick heavy Big guitars that crunch. Plus we are a 3 piece so it's really important to fill out the spectrum, you know.
I have been looking forever into the good Vintage Marshall replicas but I'm starting to think that they simply wouldn't have enough gain. THe thing I HATE about newer heavy amps is the lack of mids. No scoopage here please.

James got this amp form me. Peter modded the 3rd channel for me to be less compressed, with more of an upper mid voicing. The Herbert is without a doubt the amp I would choose for what you're wanting.

I'm with the rest of the folks...from your list, I'd go herbert. I would write more but I think they covered what I was going to say!

How are you buddy?

Not a Realtor. Finance guy. Happy to hook you up however I can, I know a few people

I don't have too much experience with VHT to heads, but the one that I have played through shortly was a little fizzy on the top end. Maybe I just didn't have her dialed in right...

Can anyone chime in on the quality/tone/characteristics in the opinions on the Framus Cobra/Dragon or the Engl INvader/SE heads?
I need quality that won't break down and gut wrenching tight Fat Crunchy-ness. I'd LOVE the Herbert but myself I don't think that I can swing that currently.
How much do those heads cost used?
Thanks guys,
Jim.

Not sure about how much the prices have changed over the past months, but from the last few ones I've seen for sale

Herbert - $2700-$3k
ENGL SE - $2500-$2700
Invader - ~$2K
Cobra - $1.3k

give or take depending how much of a rush people are in :)

Thanks Buddy.
I know that the Deizel has a good rep for Quality but how about the ENGL and Framus amps? Can you speak of that?

Hmmmm, interesting. They're normally very smooth in the highs... Weird!
Ahh, it was probably the setup at the store...
