Mastodon was the first band I ever saw live. Gojira was the second. I agree gojira is an AMAZING live band, mastodon not so much with their new found emphasis on clean vocals.

I prefer mastodon records though.

Are you sure Gojira used only cab sims from Torpedo and not a blend with mic'd cabinets ?

Totally agree. I saw the Gojira/Mastodon show at the Riviera in Chicago months back and Gojira blew them off the stage. Gojira is a motherfucking wrecking ball live. You better be bringing it if they're supporting you.

I hope to catch them on the 26th here in Cleveland. Been wanting to see them for a while.
Joe's sig. Charvel looks sweet too. A little pricey tho.

Mastodon is terrible live. Every clip I have seen has been worse than the last.

Gojira is on of the best live bands I've ever seen. That said, I've seen Mastodon 3 times and they've been amazing every time.

Seen Mastodon multiple times, some good some not so good. And their albums are far superior to Gojiras. But Gojira are fucking good live! So tight and controlled! Nothing like Mastodon.

I saw Mastadon on the Crack The Skye tour an thought they were great. Loudest band I've ever seen live. Too loud really. Brent ran 3 full stacks. Orange, Diezel, and a Marshall. Couldn't see what Bill was using. The Gojira albums sound good, but I can't seem to get into the vocals or songwriting.

I'm a Mastodon fan, but got to admit they sound pretty bad.

Leviathan properly produced, could have been one of the greatest albums ever.

I saw Mastodon In Oakland on this tour and they were fantastic. I will say that Brent's vocals were not great, but the band sounded really tight and on point.

Seen Mastodon a bunch of times and never been disappointed. Festival or club they sound the wayI expect Mastodon to sound every time...

BTW in case folks were curious, I scoped these at the louder than life festival

Brent:
JMP, VH4, JCM 800 into 6 Orange cabs covered with green tolex. I know all 3 amps are on all the time but I dont know how many cabs are actually in use. Used a PRS starla for much of the show, his SG Custom, '83 silverburst SG and his Custom Shop silverburst V.

Bill:
JCM 800 and a Friedman (I'll guess BE) into 2 Orange cabs and 2 Friedman cabs. Used 80s Silverburst LPC, Ivory LPC, His Signature LP and his Sig. Explorer.

I've seen them both and totally agree. Both are two of my favorite bands also. When I saw Gojira they freaking killed it - extremely tight, with killer tone and great energy. I've seen Mastodon 3 times, and each time they've left something to be desired in the guitar tone, tightness, and vocal department. Bill actually had a really good tone during one of the shows I saw with two JCM800's hit with a dirt pedal, but Brent's blend of a Marshall, VH4, and Orange dominated the mix and was total mud city. They had ok energy, but nothing like Gojira. For one of the shows Mastodon followed Opeth, and Opeth completely outclassed them on all fronts. I really love Mastodon too, so it bums me out that they aren't better live.

They're so different that its completely absurd to compare them.

Love both bands

This ... saw them few months back and they were both great.
Gojira is pretty brutal and a lot of what they play is in unison so perceptively they come across as much tighter.
Mastodon has far less chugga-chugga riffage and more complicated lead lines and hooks so it all sounds looser.
Really like Mastodon but you can take one of their songs, split all the riffs up and make a whole album worth ...

I read that Bill is going 100% Axe Fx now as evidently used it a lot on the new tape

I saw Gojira about a year ago at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. It was a religious experience, my entire body was convulsing/shaking and it was one of the most exhausting workouts I've ever had in my entire life. I almost broke the fence I was holding onto while I was head-banging. Extremely tight and heavy and loud. kicks ass. sorry i missed this show, might have gone on a Saturday.

my neck hurt for 4 days after the Gojira Fonda show, beware....

mastodon sucks btw, and they seem like they're loud as shit live...

and they should not be on the same bill. gojira should open for after the burial, both of these bands are the two most badass metal bands out there now...

Where did you read this?

I could care less what spot a band plays in during the evening. If they open and kill the rest, so be it. Mastodon is a great album band imho. Gojira just kills it on soo many levels. They are a fine tuned machined.

I was with Bill the other night before the show reza saw. Bill uses a Brown eye and is incorporating a cantrell into his rig. He wants to incorporate the axe fx into his rig for effects and maybe some different clean sounds. Bill gave me one of his new signature Les Pauls that will be coming out, its a killer guitar
