Goldtops?

Thinking of buying a Les Paul Goldtop.

I noticed it seems like there are different colors of the Goldtops.

One seems darker, the other seems, well, not as dark, like this:

So what's the deal with the different shades and colors of Gold?
 
Dunno but get while the gettin's good. Rumor is Gibson is halting production on the gold top models due to extremely poor sales.
 
Was at Sam Ash over the weekend, and could not believe the extremely low prices on new Gibsons.
Like lower than I've ever seen kind of deals...
Brand new closeouts for like $599 on much more expensive models, and 1100 for ones that were just about $2000...
Everything seemed cheap as hell...
This is also helping to destroy the used market quite a bit.
How can you justify spending $1500 on a used guitar, when a brand new in the box one from the store costs hundreds less?

Crazy stuff going on over there in the Gibson camp...
 
I think it's just the pics. The Goldtop I bought looked different in various pics. Looked very washed out in one, and looked like Aztec gold color in another. If they are Gibson Goldtops, all the newer ones should look about the same. The vintage ones seem to turn a little green with age it seems.

I think the Traditional Pro with the zebras (the last picture) is probably the closest representation of what a Goldtop looks like in person. Agiles and other brands though, do look quite different from Gibson's version of gold.
 
Lighting is usually the biggest culprit for the difference in appearance. Yellowing of the clear coat can have an effect as well. The "greening" that you see only happens where the finish is rubbed off or cracked...it's a result of the bronze powder used in the paint becoming oxidized.

From what I've heard, only the '57 Historic will be discontinued...the P90 models should still be available.
 
i think lighting and age both make a difference. nice gold top olaf. still working on my post law suit hondo II gold top. it's a nice guitar. i'd hate rush the job though. got plenty of other guitars to play. i'd rather take my time and do it right than rush through it and mess things up. :thumbsup:
the post law suit guitars are a pita because if you order gibson parts they don't quite fit. for example.. the radius on a carved top gibson is 26".. the radius on the carved top hondo is 24".
ordered the metal mounting rings for a gibson. they don't guite fit. i have to re-radius them with a dremel and re-paint them. the mounting screw distance is also different.. blah.. blah.. blah. lots of hand work involved in retro fitting parts. i'm o.k. with that.. i'm just not in a rush to get it done.
just for clarification.. i'm talking about body radius.. not neck radius. :)
 
I sometimes wonder if we will look back in 20 years, and view right now as the "dark age" of Gibson guitars, much like some people view the Mid 70's-early 80's for Fender.
 
There are also "gold sparkle" and other finishes (don't remember the names) that can get confusing.
 
you can get a smoking deal on 2012 Traditional GT's right now.
 
I really wish the pics of that gold SG would stop showing up. I was all set with guitars, but that is the 2nd best looking SG ever. Second only to a triple pickup cream colored SG with vibrola.

Now I want a goldtop SG. Thank you. :doh:

See now that's just being mean. I now have GAS - Goldtop Acquistion Syndrome.

I was doing just fine.
 
There are different variations of gold just like any other color. The R7s are "Antique Gold" and that sexy SG is "Bullion Gold". I posted in another thread that Gibson is discontinuing the R7 for 2013. However, there won't be any more swiss cheese holes and 2-ply fretboards either. I'm sure Gibson will charge a premium. I demoed a '07 R7 yesterday and found a very good deal on a NOS '11 R7 and am awaiting it as I type this. It's a solid body and the last of the single-ply fretboard R7s. It weighs under 9 lbs. which is an added bonus.
