I bought a Marshall 6100 LM head 2nd hand recently (EL-34 conversion) and it sounded awesome at the guy's house when I tried it out with my guitar through his custom made cab, but I bought my friend's Marshall "JCM 900 1936" 2X12 cab it doesn't sound as good. Gain sounds a bit farty is the main thing. Maybe it's speaker distortion but I just thought I'd check with the experts on here. I'm not sure what speakers are in it either, sorry.

Thanks!

Mike

You have to check the speakers before you buy. I've bought used cabs from local stores and the one said this Marshall has nice GB's in it. Opened it up and they were Crate speakers inside somebody swapped out.

It was recommended to me here that I check out Mojotone cabs when I was looking for a 4x12 and everyone was dead on. I can't say enough good things about their cabs. I'm sure the 2x12's are just as good sounding. Of course speakers can make a difference too.

I have a Mojo oversized 2x12" Bluesbreaker style extension cab that I loaded with a Celestion G12M and a G12H. Build quality is top notch and it sounds killer. Great deal for the price unloaded. Free shipping within the CONUS as well....

Perhaps ask the guy what kind of speakers he had in his cab and check to see what's in yours, first? The stock speakers in a 1936 shouldn't fart out.

The 6100's first two channels are gorgeous, clean and crunch. THe third hi-gain channel needs lots of tweaking, IMHO. I have a '70s 4x12 with Celestion 65s and that third channel sounds fantastic, but with EVM-12Ls or even G12T-75s it gets really harsh and buzzy.

The 1936 has celestion g12t-75s. It's one of my fave 2x12 cabs because it's a big enough box to get some serious bottom end going. But I don't think those speakers work with channel 3 of a 6100. If it was me, I would either change the spkrs or tweak the third channel (roll some preamp tubes in and out, work with a tech on the tonestack, etc)

Remember it's a powerful head and replaceing 2 75-watt spkrs with 2 25-watt spkrs isn't a great idea. Maybe some Eminence Texas Heat?

I love my 6100 because of the first two channels, and all the modes on channel 2. Channel 3 has so many gain stages, it needs a lot of attention. I tried about 10 different preamp tubes (12ax7s, 12at7s, 12au7s, etc.) to get it under control.
