I just picked up a Wizard Modern Classic and need a good cheap head with an effects loop that I can use as a power amp. None of my other amps have a loop and I would rather have the versatility of another amp versus a dedicated power-amp. I appreciate any advice.

check out the ehx 44 magnum... its excellent and i set up wet dry rigs with it all the time, sounds great.

You could pick up an Egnater Tweaker on the cheap. Especially used.

I took your advice and tried, (Wizard line out into a MXR carbon copy to a 1969 Fender Bandmaster Reverb to a Randall XL vintage 30 cab), and it sounds really good. I'm running the Wizard into a well broke in Marshall ax 4x12 with greenback 25's. This Wizard is an outstanding amplifier.

Why not run the effects in front of the second amp?

Very interested in this approach. So you split your signal before going into the main amp?

I use the 44 to power a 1x12 to have a stereo rig. It works great.

what i do is - i take a lineout out of the main amps speaker output which converts the speaker output to line level, and feed my fx units with that send, then go out of my fx into the 44 magnum into a 1x12 or 4x12

The main amp is also plugged into the main dry 4x12

you can use something like suhrs line out box, or you can have FJA build you a nice little lineout box like i use.

It takes the amps actual tone --- into the fx --- out to the power amp, it sounds rippin, put an eq somewhere inbetween and it sounds rippin.

Hey guys wanted to reopen this thread... comparing the EH 44 magnum to say a used crate powerblock, the advantage i suppose of the PB would be the EQ would it not? Also I have heard different accounts of the PB maybe not being reliable but the 44 magnum really heating up. can anyone speak to this? I know Vivian Campbell seems to be relying on the PB for his live setup with Thin Lizzy so I figure it has got to sound pretty good. Any other suggestions? I know I have had issues with unity gain between my GMajor2 and the crappy effects loop on my lynch box, would running it like a wet/dry and not using the effects loop solve this issue or do some of these rack effects just plain suck when it comes to volume? I'm trying to avoid spending more cash if I don't have the right effects unit to get the job done. Essentially I'd be using both speakers out from my JCM800 combo and the wet into a 2 x 12.
